22 FEATURE the Groundsman July 2012 Just champion! The rinks at Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa are all set for this month's Bowls England National Championships – thanks to an expert greenkeeping regime based on a carefully-specified maintenance programme Hosting competitions for the Under 25 Singles, Under 25 Pairs, Two-wood singles, Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours, the five-rink Victoria Park greens are carefully maintained and prepared for competition in line with a specification laid down by STRI and expertly implemented by the Glendale Grounds Management team, headed by Head Groundsman Michael Finch. Warwick District Council's Greenspace Development Officer, Simon Richardson – the person responsible for co- ordinating the ongoing maintenance programme – says "everything is ready". And that's no surprise when the maintenance regime is studied. The STRI Bowls Programme implemented at Victoria Park includes the collection and monitoring of performance data for speed, smoothness, trueness, firmness and moisture measurements, as well as annual analysis of organic matter and soil chemical status. A review of performance throughout the last two years did, however, highlight the need to reduce organic matter
