18 / SEPTEMBER.OCTOBER.2016 RINKMAGAZINE.COM Breaking the Ice ICON's unique facility has turned heads since its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 11, 2014. A day after opening, the arena hosted a 16-team tournament. It has since hosted big- shot regional player development camps, as well as the IIHF 2016 Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Tournament this April. "It was a pretty big deal," says Colborn, "because originally Ralph Engelstad was going to host it, and then one of our facilities that the Park District owns was going to be the second sheet for it... "But once the ICON Center was built, USA Hockey and those officials came and toured it. And they wanted to move the venue out here because they liked the facility so much." ICON hosted five regulation games and one quarterfinal, as well as morning skates every day for all teams. "For me, it was probably one of the biggest things I've ever been a part of being in the industry," Colborn says. 2014 OPENED RINK BREAKDOWN ICE RESURFACER: ONE PROPANE-POWERED RESURFACER 91,500 SQUARE FEET 2 200' x 85' NHL-SIZE RINKS $120/hour I C E T I M E FUN FACT: "We built an $11.5 million facility with donor funding." —Wes Colborn REFRIGERATION SYSTEM: Indirect, R507 (EACH RINK) 410 SEATING CAPACITY LOCKER ROOMS 10 TENANTS: Grand Forks Youth Hockey, Border Blades Figure Skating Club, University of North Dakota Intramural Ice Hockey, UND Club Hockey Team, North Dakota Amateur Association, Great Plains Development Camp, adult league LIGHTING IN ARENA T5 December 11, Shared overlook room SPECIAL FEATURES: , A large community room overlooks both sheets, so spectators can watch two games at once, listening to the sounds of the game through holes in the glass. , Players can do hockey-specific dryland at an in-house performance training facility operated by Choice Health & Fitness overlooking the RydellCars Rink.
