2 IDAHO FALLS PARKS & REC FALL/WINTER 2016-17 Yet another eastern Idaho fall and winter are upon us. Now that the busy summer season is in the rearview mir- ror, it's time to take it down a notch, get the kids back in school and start planning for winter fun and holidays with friends and family. The Idaho Falls Parks & Recreation guide you hold in your hands is the perfect tool to help you plan wintertime fun to keep the entire family active through these chilly winter months. Since the beginning of the year, employees and volunteers in the Parks & Recreation Department have been developing new opportunities that offer year-round access to an active and healthy lifestyle. Here are just a few examples: • The west side River Walk improvements, between Broadway and Hwy 20, were completed this spring, and the east side improvements started earlier this summer. Both of these projects include widening of the pathway to allow for safer access for multiple and diverse user groups. This year, cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing enthusiasts will be welcome on the trail. We look forward to seeing you on the new path this winter! • Two public meetings were held this year to review and get public input on the proposed redesign plans for Tautphaus Park and the new plans for the city's newest park, Heritage Park. To review the plans and other information, I encourage you to visit www.ifparkplans.com. • New Parks & Recreation partnerships, including the oversight and the management of the War Bonnet Roundup – Idaho's Oldest Rodeo, and the annual Festival of Lights at Freeman Park will result in a portion of the proceeds going into a city- wide Parks Capital Improvement Fund for future projects. As you can see, our team in the Parks & Recreation Department works hard to ensure community access to excel- lent facilities and recreational activities throughout the year. In both 2014 and 2015, we were recognized as a "Playful City USA Community." And we recently received a third award for the River Gardens just north of Pancheri Bridge – a beautiful riverbank project we are very proud of! We also recognize that none of this would be possible with- out you – the taxpayer, the citizen, the charitable organization, the developer, the service organization and others who have invested time, talents, and resources and who've given valu- able feedback. And as the holiday season approaches, I encourage you to find time to reflect on the wonderful gifts we enjoy as eastern Idaho residents. In the meantime, bundle up and get going – maybe even try snowshoeing, ice skating or cross-country ski- ing in Idaho Falls this winter! Be healthy! Get active! Enjoy Idaho Falls!
