PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL MICHIGAN'S TOP OLYMPIC SPORTS PERFORMERS Cross Country redshirt junior Aaron Baumgar- ten: The product of Williamston, Mich., was the Wolverines' top fin- isher in the season-opening Michi- gan Open, besting unattached se- nior and established U-M star Ben Flanagan by 1.6 seconds with a time of 15:09.2. Although he just missed setting a career-best time on a 5,000-meter course, it was a 15-second improvement over his fourth- place time at the same event in 2014. Cross country senior Erin Finn: The West Bloomfield, Mich., native has started the 2016 season strong, outpacing her competition in both of her races so far this year. Finn won the Michi- gan Open as an unattached athlete with a time of 16:44.5. She also put up a first-place time (17:04.2) for the Wolverines at Terre Haute, Ind., and in both her races so far this year she has finished ahead of her competition by at least 44 seconds. Soccer redshirt sophomore Sarah Jackson: The goalkeeper led her team to four shutouts through Sept. 23, bringing her career total to six. Through the first eight games of her 2016 season, Jackson allowed just three goals. In a 2-0 shutout of Ole Miss, Jackson set a career mark with nine saves, seven of which came in the second half when the Wolverines were outshot, 15-2. Volleyball sophomore Jenna Lerg: She earned Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance during the Panther Invitational Sept. 9-10. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native set a career record for digs with 39 in the team's final game of the tournament, a number that ties the third-best single-match dig total in Michigan history. Lerg put up two more double-digit dig performances on her way to being named to the all-tournament team. Field hockey junior Sam Swenson: The goal- keeper from Harrogate, England, was awarded Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors Aug. 30 and Sept. 6 following trips to North Carolina and California, respectively. After three weeks of the 2016 season, Swenson had contrib- uted to four shutouts while allowing just four goals and making 18 saves. Through Sept. 19, Swenson ranked first in the country with a 0.60 goals-against average and tied for fourth in save percentage at .818. — Leland Mitchinson
