18 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2016 BY JOHN BORTON T om Brady stood before Michi- gan's football team in 2013 and made it abundantly clear: nothing he's accomplished in football tops serving as a captain for the Wolverines. There's a head-turner, from a four- time Super Bowl champion. When addressing those in winged helmets, Brady didn't flinch. "I didn't have an easy experience," Brady said. "I didn't come in as a top- rated recruit, I didn't come in with an opportunity to play right away — I had to earn it. "In my fifth year, I was named team captain. That, to this day, is the single greatest achievement I've ever had as a football player. "The men in this room chose me to lead their team. And these were my best friends. These were the guys that knew that I liked to work. That knew that I loved football. That knew that I loved to play. That knew that I wanted to be the quarterback for Michigan." For Chris Wormley and Jake Butt, that's a mighty strong stamp of ap- proval. Wormley, a fifth-year senior defen- sive end, and Butt, an All-American senior tight end, got the nod as 2016 LEADERS AND BEST New Team Captains Chris Wormley And Jake Butt Take Charge Wormley (No. 43) is the first defensive lineman to be named a Michigan captain since 2011, while Butt (No. 88) is the first tight end to earn the honor since that same year.
