The Rideau District High School Lady Lions basketball squad opened another promising season in Kingston with three solid wins and a close loss in the championship of the Taylor Allan Memorial at Lasalle. In winning their pool, the Lady Lions defeated Bayridge Secondary 41- 38, then played great defense to contain a young but dangerous Frontenac Secondary 35-31 while also finding some great offense through good passing decisions. In Saturday's semi- final, Rideau met league rival St. Mary's from Brockville and prevailed 40-35. That set up an exciting final against host Lasalle that saw Rideau generate more excellent offense as well as some key steals to open a 10-point lead in the second quarter. However LaSalle used a high pressure full court press that wore the Rideau guards down, resulting in some costly turnovers. Late in the game LaSalle took the lead and held on for the 38-36 win. "Our kids played their hearts out this weekend. It's early, we have lots to learn and new systems to put in that suits the people we have so we can be suc- cessful," said Head Coach Ron Stenzl. "The girls surprised me, the offense was better and more efficient than I thought it might be the first weekend. And we defended really well, our rebounding was especially solid, and our new players including two grade 9's settled in very nicely," he said. This years team has the same goal as the previous several years - qualify for the All Ontario's which this season is in Timmins in late November. Five players have returned from last season's All-Ontario bronze medal team: Leah Rice, Claire French, Taylor Donaldson, Clevelyn Nairn and Maclayne Forbes. Joining them are first time seniors Christiane Rodgers and Katherine Whyte. With the small roster the seniors will also be using two grade 9's who have excelled in the Wildcats program and are ready to play at this higher level: Emily French and Sarah Brown. Three games into a stretch of five games in a week, the Westport Rideaus picked up five of a possible six points. They won 6-2 in Ottawa Tuesday night, led by a four-goal perfor- mance from Blake Ket- tyle. Kettyle, on a line with Garry Smith and Corey Symington, scored a nat- ural hat trick in the first before Michael Anson made it 4-0 after one. Anson scored again in the second to give West- port a 5-1 lead after two. Kettyle's fourth of the night scuttled any thoughts of an Ottawa Jr. Canadians comeback. Lee Spurgeon got the win, stopping 28 shots. On the weekend, West- port went into extra time twice, losing in a shootout to Brockville Friday night before winning in over- time in Prescott Saturday. Against Brockville, scoring was tight, with the game tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Sheldon Holmes had the Rideaus' regulation goal. The Tikis won 2-1 in a shootout. Alex Zoutis took the loss despite stopping 26 shots. In Prescott Saturday, the Flyers led 2-0 and 3-2 before Westport came back to win 5-4 in over- time on Mitch Larabie's game winner. Justin Saba, Simon Corriveau Skylar Choffe, and Kettyle had the Rideaus' regulation goals. This week, the Rideaus were in Brockville Wednesday night and then host Richmond Friday at 8 p.m. The Review-Mirror September 22, 2016 – 20 Elgin Wildcats basket- ball fun nights at Rideau District High School wrap up next week with the sea- son getting underway in ealry October. Westport's arena staff will be spending less time handling scheduling and more time operating the arena thanks to a new online booking service. It is hoped the proposal will increase rink usage and ease the collection of rental fees that can now be paid into the village's Pay- Pal account. BookedIN, a Canadian company based in Win- nipeg, was the company of choice for the service. The current year's booked schedule will be entered by administration staff to the calendar and linked to the Village of Westport website. The cost to the village for the booking method is $228 annually for unlimit- ed scheduling. Last sea- son's bookings covered over 400 ice time periods.
