Westport is the place to be this weekend for quilt- ing and textile enthusiasts who can enjoy workshops, presentations and exhibits from Thursday, Sept. 29 to Saturday, Oct. 1. On Saturday the Angli- can, Baptist, Catholic, Free Methodist, Presbyter- ian and United churches will be hosting quilt exhibits which are open to the public with the pur- chase of a $5 passport at the Rideau District Muse- um on Bedford Street. The event is also an opportunity to see the museum's collection of quilts which will be on display. At St Edward there will be more than 40 quilts on display from the Nesbitt family from Beckwith Township. The work crosses generations from the 1860's to 1970. The event features workshops Thursday and on Friday there will be a quilting café day and lun- cheon with a presentation. Friday's Quilting Café Day offers a chance to work on projects including the completion of a square to be included in a West- port Arts Council 2017 celebration quilt. Kits are available with autumn fabric for the 12" quilt blocks, some of which will be exhibited on Saturday before the quilt's assembly. More information about workshops, quilting activities and the tour can be found in the event tabs at the top of the Westport Arts Council website at www.westportartscoun- cil.com. Registration and a brochure are available on the site. Rideau Centennial is among a group of 16 Upper Canada District School Board schools that may be closed after this school year. A report to the Upper Canada District School Board trustees released Monday was to be dis- cussed at their regular meeting Wed., Sept. 28. Another 13 schools, including Sweet's Cor- ners, are on the chopping block in phase II if the Board can get funding to make room at neighbour- ing schools. Among the dozens of options outlined in the report, increasing the use of South Crosby Public School with the addition of Rideau Centennial stu- dents next September, was the only one involving Leeds County schools this year. Sweets Corners stu- dents would also move to South Crosby in the future if the province funds an expansion or new school in Elgin. The addition of Rideau Centennial and Sweets Corners students would put the current South Crosby facility at more than 120 per cent of its capacity. Rideau Centennial School has 35 students this year – using 25 per cent of the 138-pupil capacity. Sweets Corners is using 34 per cent of their capacity this year. Westport's Rideau Vista Public School is safe for a while, with projected enrollments over the next decade dropping from 91 to 82 per cent by 2024- 2025. The board meeting on Wednesday, where trustees were to discuss each of the affected schools would start a This Saturday, Oct. 1 the Delta community comes together to wel- come visitors to the 2nd annual Harvest Festival at sites across the village.
