24 Oct. 17, 2016 blue & gOld illustrated fourth-and-eight from the Wolfpack 16-yard line, ending an 18-play, 60- yard drive. Kelly called Mustipher's perfor- mance snapping the ball "atrocious." Kizer, as well as senior offensive lineman Mike McGlinchey, said Mustipher will bounce back. "I can't wait to talk to him, be- cause there's not much that needs to change," Kizer said. "When you go through a game like that and coach calls you out, you like to put it all on yourself. But we'll move forward, and I can guarantee that we won't have Hurricane Matthew in South Bend when we get back." Notre Dame's mishaps were team- wide, however. The weather, which Kelly described as some of the worst he's ever seen, led to many mistakes, but the seventh-year coach did not use it as a reason for the loss. "We don't have any excuses," Kelly said. "We were atrocious of- fensively. "On one play it's the left tackle. On one play it's the slot receiver. On one play it's the quarterback. It just wasn't consistent enough today. It was a lack of coordinated effort. We need to make that play that we're not making." NC State sophomore quarterback Ryan Finley finished 5-of-12 passing for 27 yards. Senior running back Matthew Dayes ran for 126 yards on 23 carries, and backup sopho- more quarterback Jalan McClendon chipped in 56 yards on 10 carries, running out of a Wildcat package. McClendon's presence, while it didn't lead to any scoring, gave the Wolfpack significant momentum in the second half. "We had talked about wildcat a little bit, but it wasn't something we expected them to do to that ex- tent," Rochell said. "That guy played well. He came in and did some good things for them." NC State's only other score was a 38-yard first-quarter field goal by sophomore kicker Kyle Bambard. Like Yoon's, Bambard's kick nar- rowly cleared the line of scrimmage and just got over the crossbar. It gave the Wolfpack a 3-0 advantage with 1:20 left in the first quarter. "A lot of people stepped up in this game," fourth-year NC State coach Dave Doeren said. "Defensively, we played outstanding, not really wor- ried about yardage because of the field condition. The way we kept stopping them on third and fourth downs was what was important." Even after leaving Hurricane Mat- thew, storms continued to swirl around the Irish football program. ✦ NOrth carOliNa state 10, NOtre daMe 3, Oct. 8, 2016 ✦ Attendance: 58,200 Carter-Finley ✦ Raleigh, N.C. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Tot.
