Martin led the squad with 18 points … Michigan enjoyed a seven-game winning streak (one shy of tying the school record of eight, set in 2013) that began Sept. 2 against Ole Miss but ended in a 3-0 loss at Illinois Oct. 6 … When the Wolverines checked in at No. 19 in the NSCAA Divi- sion I rankings in early October, it was their first appearance in the poll since being ranked No. 25 on Oct. 28, 2014 … Waldeck was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 4 after recording a hat trick against Rutgers Sept. 29, and an assist against Maryland Oct. 2 … Sopho- more midfielder Jackie White scored her first career goal in the victory over the Terrapins … Redshirt junior midfielder/ forward Ani Sarkisian scored in the 77th minute to break a scoreless tie against Michigan State Sept. 24, giving the Wol- verines a 1-0 victory. — Austin Fox VOLLEYBALL (16-4, 5-3 BIG TEN) No. 18 Michigan provided a stiff chal- lenge No. 1 Wisconsin Oct. 15, but fell 3-2 at Cliff Keen Arena to end a three- match winning streak … It would have been the first time in team history that U-M defeated the top-ranked team in the country … The loss comes after a 3-1 home win over No. 19 Ohio State Oct. 9 … The previous two losses in conference play ended in sweeps by No. 2 Nebraska and No. 10 Penn State … In addition to Nos. 1, 2 and 10 in the Oct. 10 national poll, the Big Ten is also represented in the top 25 by No. 3 Minnesota, No. 14 Michi- gan State, No. 18 Michigan, No. 19 Ohio State, No. 22 Purdue and No. 24 Illinois … Senior middle blocker and unanimous preseason All-Big Ten selection Abby Cole led the Wolverines in kills (231), total hit attempts (518), blocks (76) and hitting percentage (.349) through Oct. 16 … She ranked eighth in the Big Ten for kills per set (3.55) … Sophomore defensive spe- cialist Jenna Lerg and freshman setter MacKenzi Welsh are the leaders defen- sively for U-M, having recorded 317 and 157 digs, respectively … Lerg led the Big Ten in total digs … Michigan ranked sec- ond overall in the conference in kills per set (14.24, trailing Minnesota by 0.02) and number of total kills (997) … The team was also fourth in assists (13.17 per set) and fifth in hitting percentage (.279). — Zach Libby In No. 18 Michigan's near upset over No. 1 Wisconsin, freshman setter MacKenzi Welsh notched 49 assists and 11 digs to earn her fifth career assist-dig double-dou- ble.
