T his month's Smorgasbord takes a look at Reveille Russet, a uniform, medium-early, high pack-out fresh market russet with wide adaptability. Reveille Russet was developed by the Texas Potato Breeding and Variety Development Program. The program director is J. Creighton Miller, Jr., and research associates are Douglas Scheuring and Jeffrey Koym. The name "Reveille" (a signal to rise) reflects the variety's earliness and is also the name of Texas A&M University's famous collie mascot. S M O R GA S B OR D THE S M O R GA S B OR D REVEILLE RUSSET REVEILLE REVEILLE REVEILLE PARENTAGE • Bannock Russet × A8343-12 HISTORY • Cross made by USDA-ARS's Joe Pavek in Aberdeen, Idaho, and selected and developed by Creighton Miller at Texas A&M University • PVP- issued in 2015 KEY ATTRIBUTES • Wide adaptability • Excellent culinary qualities • Attractive oblong tubers with excellent size profile and shape and medium russeting • High percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers, particularly in the 6- to 10-ounce and 10- to 18-ounce classes • Tends to produce fewer culls than Russet Norkotah • Tends to wound-heal a light brown color upon skinning at harvest • Resistant to hollow heart, second growth and blackspot bruise • White flesh with a low incidence of internal defects • Good disease expression MANAGEMENT • Typically requires 160 to 200 pounds of nitrogen, depending on carryover and soil type • Skin set three to four weeks after vine kill • Not sensitive to Metribuzin • Medium dormancy; stores better than Russet Norkotah REVEILLE RUSSET 46 POTATO GROWER | NOVEMBER 2016
