Haas would know. He guards Swan-
igan in practice.
"He's going to be a major problem,"
Haas said.
The reasonable expectation for
Swanigan this season is that he'll be a
more efficient and productive offensive
player — higher field goal percentage,
less turnovers, more assists — and an
improved defensive player who stands
to benefit too from some of Purdue's
schematic changes in that regard.
It's reasonable to expect a much dif-
ferent, even better, version of Swanigan.
"I think he can be one of the best
players in our league," Painter said. "I
think he has a good chance to make an
impact not only on our league, but on
the country."
But Swanigan, above all else, just
wants to make an impact at Purdue.
He admits that last season, his pri-
ority might have been himself. Now,
he says, it's his team.
He says as much with the under-
standing that the two's best interests
are not mutually exclusive.
If Swanigan has a great year, there's a
great chance that Purdue has a great year.
And if that happens, his future path
takes care of itself.
No one holds any misconceptions
about the fact that Swanigan's second
season at Purdue will most likely be
his final season at Purdue.
"That's how anyone should look at
it at this level," Swanigan said. "If the
stars line up, then there is no reason
not to go."
If Swanigan does leave after this
season, he can say something he
might not have been able to had he left
last spring: That at least he enjoyed
himself along the way.
