VOLUME 27, ISSUE 2 57 Iowa: The Hawkeyes were thrilled to get outstanding 2-guard Peter Jok back after a brief flirtation with the NBA draft, but aside from that, this a significant overhaul for Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes lose their star in forward Jarrod Uthoff, their size in center Adam Woodbury and their savvy in point guards Mike Gesell and Anthony Clemmons. Now what? Well, Jok figures to be one of the best in the Big Ten, while unconventional forward Dom Uhl stands to move into a prime role as might sophomores Ahmad Wagner and Nicolas Baer. Iowa needs big things from some of its freshmen, notably highly touted power forward signee Tyler Cook and reigning state Mr. Basketball Jordan Bohannon, who'll be first in line to try to lock down the Hawkeyes' crucial vacancy at point guard. Michigan: The Wolverines lost star Ca- ris LeVert, but he's been hurt so much the past few years, there won't be much of an adjustment to life without him. Michigan returns what could again be a very good of- fensive team, led by senior point guard Derrick Walton, a preseason All-Big Ten player, as well as sharp-shooters Zak Irvin and Duncan Robinson. Guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman did some good things in LeVert's ab- sence last season and now stands to occupy a larger role as a junior. It's a season of significant change in Ann Arbor, as several players transferred and two of John Beilein's as- sistant coaches left in the off-season for head coaching jobs. Michigan will have to improve defensively and find a way to rebound and defend the post on some nights. Mark Donnal is more of a stretch 5 who fits well into Beilein's spread-out offensive system, but doesn't give them a whole lot around the rim. PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN The following is the ballot Gold and Black submitted to the Big Ten for preseason all-con- ference. • Illinois guard Malcolm Hill • Indiana center Thomas Bryant • Indiana forward O.G. Anunoby • Iowa guard Peter Jok • Maryland guard Melo Trimble • Purdue forward Vincent Edwards • Purdue forward Caleb Swanigan • Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes • Wisconsin forward Ethan Happ • Wisconsin guard Bronson Koenig Player-of-the-Year: Hayes Illinois A big-time forward, Malcolm Hill may lead the Big Ten in scoring, but can he deliver the Illini from the bottom tier of the conference?
