VOLUME 27, ISSUE 2 67 a career-high 23 points at Rutgers, including seven in overtime. She scored 22 against Minnesota. Frequently down the stretch, Pur- due looked for her on the offensive end, knowing that she had matchup advantages against slower post play- ers. Sometimes, McBryde willingly accepted those responsibilities; oth- er times, she faded into the back- ground. But the Boilermakers want — and need really — more of the for- mer now. "At the end of the year we had a conversation (about that) and she has lofty goals," Versyp said. "… She is a champion. Her mindset is totally different, that's not going to be an issue, and that comes with mental toughness, fighting through things and understanding who you are. She is through her freshman year and knows what we went right and wrong and she's now embracing it. She's not wait- ing." If McBryde does well, she could be a nightmare for opponents, especially if she continues to work on her perimeter game. This offseason, she retooled her shoot- ing form, hoping it would make her more consistent, and more confident, from mid-range. And she's worked on that in combination with her ball-handling, hoping she can draw defenders out, then drive to the lane, where she's already shown to be deadly. "Dom is a beast and she just needs to get the ball and go," Keys said. "She knows that we all look for her." McBryde is likely to be an anchor inside, where the Boilermakers have more depth now than a year ago. Harris helps, because the 6-1 forward is the sort of phys- ical presence the Boilermakers lacked last season. The freshman from Lawrence North in Indianapolis is an impressive athlete, with a particularly good defen- sive skillset, especially if she adapts to play in Purdue's Purdue Dominique McBryde could be a dominant player for Purdue, particularly if she can expand her game on the perimeter.
