A public meeting of the Upper Canada School Board's Accommodation Review Committee's (ARC) Lanark, Rideau and Smiths Falls schools will be held Wednesday, November 16 at Perth DCI. The 6:30-9:30 meeting is an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on proposals which were in a staff report presented to trustees in September. The staff report sug- gests the closing of the Sweets Corners School after the board is able to secure funding to make improvements to the South Crosby School in Elgin. Rideau Centennial is slat- ed to close next year because of its almost one- room-school sized enroll- ment. Both schools, within ministry guidelines, are rich in space but low in students. Sweets Corners enroll- ment of 116 was just over a third of its 337 pupil des- ignation. Last year Rideau Centennial's 138 pupil capacity was used by just 35 students who were all triple-graded. The meeting in Perth is an opportunity for the pub- lic to present their response to the ARC and for the committee to pro- vide the public with infor- mation about the staff report, the accommodation review process and an online survey. Sweets Corners par- ents, which are against the potential closure, have opted to present their case to the ARC in a delegation at a meeting which is scheduled for January 30 at Smiths Falls DCI. The community, includ- ing parents, staff and those not directly connected with a school can partici- pate in an online survey which the school board has created to provide information to the ARC. The public meetings are following a standard form across to board to allow for information to be dis- seminated to the public and for the public to pro- vide information to the committees. The two meetings each allow for Rideau Lakes residents can learn more about options for municipal rep- resentation of Rideau Lakes next Monday when consultants present their report regarding Council and Ward Structure Review. The consulting firm Strategy Corp will be pre- senting their report which they authored this fall after individual interviews with councilors, public open houses in August and an online survey in Sep- tember. The meeting on Mon- day November 14 begins at 5:30 pm and will be held at the Portland Com- munity Hall to accommo- date the anticipated inter- est from residents in the report Around 200 people par- The North Leeds Christmas Toy Drive is now entering its 24th year of serving families in Rideau Lakes Township and the Village of West- port.
