DECEMBER 2016 THE WOLVERINE 11 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Michigan freshman wide receiver Eddie McDoom initially became a fan favorite for his name, fans yelling "DOOOOOOM" every time he touched the ball. He's since become popular for his play, having factored into a number of U-M wins this year. McDoom talked about his contribu- tions in this recent Q&A: The Wolverine: What was the first time you heard the fans calling your name, and what was your reaction? Eddie McDoom: "It was [the first game] against Hawai'i … I thought, 'Are they booing?' Then I realized what it was. I think it's pretty nice. I never heard that in high school, so coming to college football and hearing it in the biggest stadium in the country, it's amazing." The Wolverine: What's the origin of the family name? McDoom: "I don't really know the his- tory of it, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to find out soon. I'm going to have to. It's just an awesome name … I got lucky there." The Wolverine: You've become the designated jet-sweep rusher on this team. What did you do to earn that? McDoom: "I feel like I'm the fastest guy here. That's how I'm always going to think, because speed is my thing. When they give it to me I try to make the most of it. So far, I'm doing well." The Wolverine: What's the transition been like coming from Florida to the Midwest, and how have the veteran re- ceivers treated you? McDoom: "I'm loving my time here. I'm taking what coach gives me right now; I'm such a young player and I'm trying to learn from [fifth-year seniors] Amara [Darboh] and Jehu [Chesson]. By next year, I think I'll blow up. I'll be able to take a step. "Amara is a boss. He's one of the best receivers here. Him and Chesson, learn- ing from those guys is a blessing be- cause they make amazing plays — plays that I need to make in the future." The Wolverine: How much pressure was there to stay closer to home during the recruiting process? McDoom: "Everybody keeps talking about, 'Why didn't you go to Florida, or down back at home somewhere?' I'm like, 'Michigan is where it's at.' The Big Ten is here. The SEC is great and all, but I think this is way better." — Chris Balas McDoom has rushed 15 times for 154 yards and caught five passes for 59 yards in his first 10 college games.
