By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Local food banks are counting on the public's help this Saturday, Dec. 3 with Build a Mountain of Food collections in West- port and Elgin. On Saturday morning Hugh Colton and local food bank volunteers will be at Kudrinko's Country Grocer to accept food and cash or cheque donations. The team moves to Elgin in the afternoon where volunteers will be stationed at Gordanier's Freshmart. The Christmastime campaign is crucial for the Elgin Food Bank which relies on the generosity of the local community and its organizations to sup- port those who need the food bank's assistance. "Usually the Build the Mountain gets us through a good part of the year," said Elgin Food Bank Coordinator Sue Crump whose group supports around 35 households. The food banks will also be distributing Christ- mas hampers this month. Buying for the food bank's needs costs around $1300 a month, money which wasn't there this fall when it was needed. "We were in panic mode around September and October but the com- munity helped us out," she said. Crump has seen the number of households the food banks serves double since she began volunteer- ing in 2010. "We have a lot of sea- sonal workers in the area which can push people to come to us. Heating and hydro costs are a huge fac- tor for people," she said. A rise and fall in need is also part of the Westport Food Bank's operations which run from a summer time low of 25 households that has moved into the mid-thirties in November. "We've signed up at least one new family a week. I suspect we still have some new ones com- ing in," said Westport Food Bank co-coordinator Pat Grundy. "Cash is quite impor- tant. That allows us to go out and buy what we regu- larly stock," she said. Items beyond soup, peanut butter, canned beans, canned vegetables, canned meats, tomato sauce, are also appreciat- ed. Items appreciated in the winter include hot chocolate, dry cereals, and baking supplies. "People like to bake in the winter if they can. There are seasonally based needs and wants," said Grundy. Build a Mountain will be returning to North Leeds two more Saturdays in December including a visit to Portland at the bank and liquor store on the morning of Dec. 10 and, on Dec. 17 when they will be at Athens Fresh- mart in the morning and Delta Country Market in the afternoon. The Delta Country Christmas tradition of the Christmas story told through readings and son always ends at the Old Stone Mill's driveshed where audience and partici- pants enjoy a youthful tableau of the Christmas story. Demand on food banks grows in winter Build a Mountain returns to help local food banks through a critical time The Review-Mirror December 1, 2016 – 16 AFFILIATES REALTY LTD., BROKERAGE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED AND OPERATED w Tanya Lemcke Broker Brad Wing Sales Representative 613-484-5447 (direct) BradWing.remax@gmail.com 613-484-0121 (direct) westportremax@gmail.com 41B Main St., Westport Office (613) 273-2021 www.remaxwestport.ca "We didn't just change one thing...
