38 HIP HOP / RNB www.guestlist.net BLU Issue 41 / 2012 GANG STARR Guru passes but the legend of Gang starr lives on through the music thats been left behind. Unfortunately, due to the tragic passing of Guru in 2010, four years after the breakup of the legendary New York outfit, the days of Gang Starr are behind us. However, their music is bound to live on in DJ sets around the world, not least from Gang Starr producer DJ Premier, a legend in his own right as one of the best beat-makers of all time. Renowned for certified hip hop classics like Full Clip and Just To Get A Rep, Gang Starr were also responsible for bringing acts like Jeru the Damaja to greater prominence through the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective of east coast rappers affiliated with Guru and Premier. They are also noted for their excellent collaborations with the likes of Snoop Dogg, MOP, and Inspectah Deck across their 17 year career. With their smooth jazzy style, sounding laid-back even when delivering the most ferocious of lyrics, Gang Starr are doubtless going to remain as symbolic of classic New York rap as Nas or Wu Tang. DJ Premier has recently indicated at a Gang Starr DVD/CD project to be released soon, and continues to make more of the great beats that made him a legend to this day. RIP Guru. Get to know this underground legend whose a breath of fresh air to the world of hip hop. Few artists can boast the everyman appeal that forms much of Blu's persona. His debut, 2007's Below The Heavens, is widely considered to be a modern underground classic and features songs on themes like trying to balance romantic and professional life, not being sure how to approach girls in nightclubs, and his spiritual struggle, making a welcome break from the materialistic bragging that dominates much of modern hip hop. All this, not to mention his fantastic wordplay and flow. Since then, Blu has put out 5 more solo albums, a handful of EPs, countless mixtapes and has ventured into production. He has also flirted with mainstream exposure with not one, but two, guest verses on The Roots' 2010 album How I Got Over, as well as collaborations with 9th Wonder and the late J Dilla and performing at Rock The Bells. Not content with sticking to the well-worn territory of soul and jazz beats, his most recent effort, No York, shows Blu rapping over futuristic abstract beats for one of the most interesting hip hop albums in recent years.
