The communities of Westport and Elgin came through for those-in-need last Saturday, with over $15,000 in donations to the annual Build a Moun- tain of Food campaign. The Westport Food Bank received $8600 and 32 boxes of food during the morning campaign at Kudrinko's. The campaign in Elgin began in the morning and continued with the help of the Build a Mountain crew in the afternoon. The cam- paign gathered 34 boxes of food and $7024 in cash donations. "It was a really good day it went really well. We were really impressed with the businesses and people in Elgin," said Rev Bob Crump, Bethel Taber- nacle's pastor. The success of the December campaign is essential for the food bank to have the capacity to serve its clients from its home at the church. Build a Mountain con- tinues this Saturday morn- ing in Portland on Col- borne Street between the LCBO and Royal Bank. The campaign continues in the afternoon in Mer- rickville. On Dec. 17 the cam- paign winds up with a stop at the Athens Freshmart in the morning before a last stop in Delta at the Coun- try Market. After waiting since last spring for their day in court, the Village of West- port agreed to a plea deal with the Ministry of the Environment last Wednes- day. The village will pay a $10,000 fine after plead- ing guilty to one charge of failing to properly operate and maintain the sewage treatment plant. It was one of four charges the village was facing since 2015 – two against both Clerk-Trea- surer Scott Bryce and the village. The other three were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea. "It was decided we did- n't have enough support- ing documentation (to go to trial). "We just wanted to put this behind us," Mayor Robin Jones said after Wednesday's court appear- ance. After a closed session of council with solicitors, the village pled not guilty at an April 20 hearing in Brockville. Owner Ron Rudd isn't putting a timeline on when repairs and cleaning will be completed for staff and residents to move back to the Main Street residence. The fire started last Tuesday morning in a stor- age area beneath the main floor dining room. The room was gutted by the fire. Rudd said once power is restored to the building the restoration specialists can begin cleaning, including throwing out all of the home's food. Eight of the residents' rooms were located upstairs in the main build- ing. While there is exten- sive smoke damage on the floors of the main building the rooms on the east wing were untouched. "You wouldn't have known anything had hap- pened," said Rudd who is pleased with how the com- munity and his staff have come through for the resi- dents. "They stepped in and they have continued to fol- low through. I'm really fortunate, I have really really good staff. I really want my staff to know they are appreciated," he said. After the fire, the resi- dents were initially accommodated at other retirement homes, with Seeley's Bay staff and with family. After the fire alarm went off early last Tues- day morning staff had to wake the residents, get them out of bed and across the street to the communi- ty hall, following the emergency plan. "Initially they said it would be a short time," said Rudd, who later real- ized he needed to bring them back together (at the Comfort Inn) for what was going to be a longer term. "It was a little bit rough for them. Nothing's the same in their rooms. They only have a limited amount of clothes. They are doing okay. They are happy to be together. The hotel and their staff have been excellent," he said.
