the Pro Moto Ironman class and
indicated how difficult the race
was for him as well as most of
the other solo racers. "About 200
miles into the race, I knocked my
head pretty good and started
making bad decisions," said
Benrud. "I crashed about eight
times. It was a tough course and
a long time being on a bike. The
class this year was tough with
two of us back and forth several
times. Last year I said I would
never do it again but that seems
to change when I feel better."
It was no different for the Pro
Moto 60 riders, of which Mark
Hawley in the 625X Honda CRF
450X was the only competitor and
managed to finish the race to win
the class. Hawley teamed up with
co-riders Robert Koch, Dennis
Greene, Dennis McLaughlin, John
Marshall, and Ropert Hanson.
"Next year I'm going point to
point," said Hawley. "I'm looking
forward to it. My nemesis is silt
and I had a tough time in it."
SPORTSMAN MOTO
AND QUAD RIDERS
FINISH STRONG
In previous years, the Sportsman
riders had a tough time during
races like the SCORE Baja 1000.
In 2016, however, there were 15
starters in the SPT M/C Class,
of which 11 finished the race.
The first one across the finish
line was Fernando Barbosa on
the 235x Honda, who won the
SPT M/C class with the help of
co-riders Fernando Ferreyra,
Alberto Ruiz, and Alejandro
Holguin. They completed the
course with a time of 23:27:33,
and averaged 36.43 mph.
In the SPT Quad class, most all
of the Sportsman riders started
and completed the race. Out of
the eight starters, the 103a team
of Greg Delgado managed to win
the class with a time of 22:40:12
on their Honda TRX450R. The
team consisted of Delgado,
Oskar Espinoza, Hector Orozco,
and Heriberto Marquez. SJ
