49TH SCORE BAJA 1000 RACE RECAP WINNING THE SCORE LITES CLASS WAS RICH ROBERTS AND HIS TEAM IN THE NUMBER 1208 CAR. had the top lights after that but we were able to graft some new ones on the front. We were down two or three hours. From mile 60 we were in limp mode because we lost a cylinder. Even when we crashed we weren't going fast." Despite the loss of time after the crash, Broughton and team managed to complete the race and earn enough points to seal their 2016 Championship season. A CLASS 10 UPSET Going into the SCORE Baja 1000, Class 10 competitors Raphael Navarro IV and Todd Winslow have been neck and neck in the points race to win the 2016 Championship. While Winslow had alternator issues that ultimately put them in sixth place, and Navarro IV had to struggle from the back of the pack, Justin Davis from Chino Hills, California, managed to have a clean race and ended up winning the class ahead of them both. "The whole game plan was to just keep the car moving and let the race come to us," said Davis. "I think we tightened a skid plate and that was about it. The course was gnarly and it seemed like the back section never ended. Overall it was a brutal track but they put on another great event." With the help of co-drivers Vic Bruckmann, and his father Rafael Navarro III, Navarro's second place finish didn't come without its silver lining, earning enough points to be the Class 10 Points Champion this season. "I don't know what it is but we've been jinxed this whole year," said Navarro IV. "We ran straight seconds all year losing first place finishes by literally seconds. We are happy to be here and to bring home a championship. We are a team of family and friends and we can't do it without them. We think we lost second gear around race mile 320. We had to be quick on the fly and work through shifting it from first to third. We got a rhythm and that's how we ran. We made up time and kept the car together. Baja is where you face and you conquer your demons. You have to stay on top of it and you can't get out of your head. It is a true test of man and machine." 042 SCORE JOURNAL
