GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 3 11 Kyle Charters I've watched the Jeff Brohm XFL clip at least a dozen times and I love it. So what if it's manufactured, it also shows his willingness to adapt to a situation. And what an odd situation the XFL was. When Brohm was with the Orlando Rage 15 years ago, he was full-time quarterback but also part-time cheerleader. When the struggling XFL needed a ratings boost late in its failed 2001 season/ business venture, Brohm obliged, famously —infamously — playing to the crowd by asking if he had a pulse. Because he did, he declared it time to play football. His adaptability will be key at Purdue, as well, where the Boilermakers will need a great P.R. man in the summer, when he hits the road to drum up interest, a great salesman during peak recruiting periods, because Purdue needs players, and a great tactician in the fall, so Purdue can win some games. His ability to be convincing in those roles, like he was for Vince McMahon in '01, will go a long way toward determining his success at Purdue. Stacy Clardie People seem enamored with the clip of Jeff Brohm from his XFL days — so much so Purdue even has centered its branding around Brohm's post-concussion "let's play football" pregame speech. For me, though, that's not nearly close to the most insightful clip. Isn't even No. 2. Watching video of Brohm in the locker room before and after games tell me much more than a contrived — but emphatically delivered — statement ever could. With passion oozing out of his pores, Brohm implored players to believe in themselves, to play hard in those pregame WKU videos. Then, after success, he celebrated with them. There wasn't even a hint of phoniness. Brohm's former players said what you see is what you get. He's a fiery, competitive guy who will demand excellence but also offer the flip side by incorporating fun and gaining loyalty because of a sincere desire to connect to players on a personal level. It seems like the perfect balance, the ideal coaching style. And it could be the most important piece to creating a culture. What is Jeff Brohm's best trait? By The Numbers 131 $3.5 42.7 12.9 Photos by Western Kentucky (Brohm); Washington State (Shephard); Tom Campbell (threes, Moore) Touchdowns thrown the last three seasons by Western Kentucky quarterbacks: Brandon Doughty in 2014 and '15 and Mike White in 2016. The duo also racked up 13,912 yards in three seasons. Million pool for assistant coaches salaries, up about $1 million from the previous allotment. JaMarcus Shephard, the first of the announced assistants, comes after one year at Washington State. But his salary has not yet been released. Three-point percentage by the Boilermakers through their first 12 games, the best mark since the 1987-88 Boilermakers, led by the Three Amigos. It was a different game back then; this year, Purdue is on pace for nearly double the attempts from deep. E'Twaun Moore's scoring average his freshman season (2007-08), a rookie mark that Carsen Edwards is approaching. Edwards is averaging 10.5 through the first dozen games, the highest since Moore nine seasons ago. Boiler Index
