GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 3 62 Top Memory: A wild double-digit comeback win over No. 14 Michigan in January provides momentum for the eventual NIT title team, led by Frank Kendrick, John Garrett and Bruce Parkinson. The overtime win over the Wolverines is on the short list of the most dramatic games ever played in the building. Season 8: 1974-75 Record: 11-1 Top Memory: With three freshmen starters, the Boiler- makers are nearly unbeatable at home, with the only loss a one-point heartbreaker to undefeated and No. 1 Indiana. Section-long signs, on sheets, greeted the Hoosiers, and the building was full nearly 45 minutes before tipoff. Season 9: 1975-76 Record: 8-5 Top Memory: Another donnybrook battle and heartbreak- ing defeat to eventual national champion Indiana was the closest the Hoosiers came to a loss that season. Season 10: 1976-77 Record: 11-3 Top Memory: Mackey Arena is showcased for the first time on national television as Purdue beats defending national champ IU 86-78 in front of a deafening crowd. The building was tabbed as "one of the nation's loudest" by the NBC broadcast crew. Season 11: 1977-78 Record: 11-1 Top Memory: Trying to save energy during a nation-wide coal strike, Purdue blows out Michigan State and Magic Johnson on a game played on a Thursday afternoon. Walter Jordan, Wayne Walls and Eugene Parker may have endured a disappointing season, but not on this day. Season 12: 1978-79 Record: 15-2 Top Memory: First-year coach Lee Rose leads Purdue to a share of the Big Ten title, thanks in part to a last-second game-winning shot by Arnette Hallman to beat eventual national champ MSU. It was the first time a Purdue team had ever taken an encore-style victory lap. Season 13: 1979-80 Record: 15-2 Top Memory: On senior day against Michigan State, All-America center Joe Barry Carroll presents his mom with roses, reducing the sellout crowd to tears. A week later, Purdue wins two NCAA games at home en route to its most recent Final Four trip. Season 14: 1980-81 Record: 12-3 Top Memory: First-year coach Gene Keady beats Bob Knight for the first of 21 times in one of the craziest games ever in the building, a 68-66 win over eventual national champ IU. It ends with Knight chasing the refer- ees off the court, pleading the case after star guard Isiah Thomas was called for traveling in the closing seconds. Season 15: 1981-82 Record: 12-4 Top Memory: With a trip to the postseason in the balance, Purdue upends No. 11 Iowa on senior day thanks to a highly disputed phantom foul call by referee Jim Bain. Purdue took the game, then ended the season in the NIT title game. Season 16: 1982-83 Record: 13-1 Top Memory: In the height of the Cold War, Purdue beats Olympic champion Russia in an exhibition game on a dramatic game-winning 30-footer by Curt Clawson. It sets the tone in a surprising season for Keady's Cardiac Kids. Season 17: 1983-84 Record: 12-1 Top Memory: Picked to finish near last in the Big Ten, Keady wins his first Big Ten title thanks in part to a rau- cous late-season win over co-champ Illinois and the play of walk-on-tuned-Big Ten-MVP Jim Rowinski. Season 18: 1984-85 Record: 12-4 Top Memory: Illinois was the victim again, as the Boil- ermakers' youthful team upsets the No. 6 Illini, holding them to just 34 points, the fewest ever by a conference opponent in building history. Sure it was good defense, but on that night, the Illini were simply awful. Season 19: 1985-86 Record: 13-2 Top Memory: Wins over Indiana always feel good, espe- cially blowouts, as Purdue dismantles the No. 15 Hoosiers to help earn its fourth-straight NCAA appearance. The 17-point margin was the largest over IU since the 1960s. Season 20: 1986-87 Record: 12-1 Top Memory: In a span of five days, the Boilermakers face defending national champ Louisville, No. 2 Iowa and No. 9 Illinois in Mackey. Never was there more national television attention on Mackey Arena for the only team in school history to be ranked in the top-10 from start to finish. Season 21: 1987-88 Record: 15-1 Top Memory: Purdue claims its first undisputed Big Ten crown in 19 years thanks to a 80-67 win over Michigan in early March. It culminates an amazing run by the Three
