GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 3 63 Amigos of Troy Lewis, Todd Mitchell and Everette Ste- phens that leaves the crowd chanting "Big Ten Champs" in unison in the game's final minute. Season 22: 1988-89 Record: 11-3 Top Memory: Despite the first sub-.500 record in 23 years, Purdue is still really good at home, and in the season finale, a capacity senior day crowd pleads with signs and voices for Keady to shun a job offer from Arizona State. It works as a few days later a new contract was inked by the Boilermaker boss. Season 23: 1989-90 Record: 12-1 Top Memory: Home wins over top-10 foes Michigan and Illinois help Purdue make a season-long run at the Big Ten title. Jimmy Oliver's bank shot delivers a dramatic win over the defending national champ Wolverines in the home finale. Season 24: 1990-91 Record: 11-5 Top Memory: A late-season 72-67 win over No. 2 ranked Ohio State makes the home fans delirious and morphs the Boilermakers from a bubble team to an NCAA Tournament one, despite just a 9-9 league record. Season 25: 1991-92 Record: 13-5 Top Memory: It doesn't get better for Purdue fans: A se- nior day big-time upset of No. 3 Indiana not only knocks the Hoosiers off the Big Ten championship pedestal, it costs them a No. 1 seed. Guard Woody Austin's sec- ond-half scoring spree (six consecutive baskets) is one of the best ever in the building. Season 26: 1992-93 Record: 9-5 Top Memory: Glenn Robinson, in his first Big Ten game, and the ninth-ranked Boilermakers fall short in a bat- tle with third-ranked Michigan's Fab Five. Still, it's a star-studded show rarely duplicated in Mackey. Season 27: 1993-94 Record: 13-1 Top Memory: On senior day, Robinson not only solidifies his national player-of-the-year status with a 49-point ef- fort against Illinois but also earns Purdue an outright Big Ten title. Robinson and Mount were the greatest individu- al Boilermakers to play in the building. Season 28: 1994-95 Record: 12-1 Top Memory: Senior day a year later is also eventful as the Boilermakers, led by seniors Cuonzo Martin and Matt Waddell, hold off Michigan to claim their first back-to- back outright Big Ten titles in school history. Purdue wasn't pretty without the "Big Dog," but it was relentless. Season 29: 1995-96 Record: 13-1 Top Memory: The Three-Pete postgame celebration on senior day is great, but the defining home moment is the 17-point whipping of No. 8 Penn State two weeks earlier that put Purdue in the driver's seat for its date with Big Ten hoops history. Season 30: 1996-97 Record: 11-3 Top Memory: After losing six seniors from the previous year, the talented, but youthful Boilermakers struggle. But they manage to work their way into the NCAA Tourna- ment thanks to dominating wins over nationally ranked Indiana and Illinois. Junior center Brad Miller averages 26 and 10 in the wins. Season 31: 1997-98 Record: 13-1 Top Memory: Purdue's best team to not win a Big Ten title, as it ranks in the top 10 for much of the season. The best game is IU, of course, as Purdue pulls out a 94-89 victory in late February in a classic matchup between the two programs. An injury to talented sophomore Jaraan Cornell in the game would loom large later in the year. Season 32: 1998-99 Record: 12-4 Top Memory: The Boilermakers didn't put it all together that season until the end, but a 90-75 victory over Iowa in mid-February helps a team with an 8-10 conference record not only land in the Big Dance, but also advance to the Sweet 16. Season 33: 1999-2000 Record: 12-2 Top Memory: Purdue is definitely at its best at the end of the year, and a 70-67 come-from-behind win over even- tual national champion Michigan State on Feb. 8 changes the Boilermakers' trajectory. Purdue ends up the in the Elite Eight thanks to seniors like Brian Cardi- nal, Mike Robinson and Cornell. All were huge that night against Sparty. Season 34: 2000-01 Record: 11-7 Top Memory: The Boilermakers struggle like never before at home, but do have a few bright spots, including a 73-67 upset of No. 17 Wisconsin on Jan. 10. The victory was the 27th consecutive win over the Badgers in Mackey, a fact hard to imagine considering where the Wisconsin pro- gram is today.
