Purdue lost Horrocks after the second game, when the center had to shut down because of a patella injury in her right knee suffered during workouts before the season. Murphy made it seven games longer, but tore the ACL in her left knee during the take-off for a layup. Both will apply for — and likely receive — medical redshirts. Abby Abel 2 5-5 • G • So. Abel scored the first points of her career against North Carolina Central in December, when the Boilermakers set her up for a three-pointer from the left corner. A nice reward for the hard- working walk-on. Her role in practice has been important this season, because the Boilermakers are short a couple players due to injury. Miracle Gray 5 5-6 • G • Fr. Purdue is easing Gray in, with the freshman backup point guard playing only six of the first dozen games, and only for a total of 25 minutes. But if she can better learn the nuances of the Boilermakers' offense and get teammates into sets, then she could see her minutes increase, if even slightly, during the Big Ten. Nora Kiesler 12 6-6 • C • So. Like last season, Kiesler has been effective in the right matchups, but she doesn't always find those against guard-oriented teams in non-conference play. She's averaged about two points and two rebounds in 10 minutes per game, missing one due to a concussion. But she might have a bigger impact in the Big Ten, depending on whether an opponent has a like- sized center. Dominique McBryde 20 6-2 • F • So. McBryde has been the mystery of the season so far, with the sophomore struggling to find any sort of offensive consistency. Perhaps it's that she's suffering a bit of mental overload, after spending the offseason reshaping her offensive repertoire. Then, she tried to move it outward, retooling the form of her jumper, taking more three-pointers, improving her dribble. But in all of that, she might have misplaced what made her successful last season, a variety of inside moves that made her a difficult stop for slower opponents. Hard to believe a player so talented will continue to struggle much longer. Lamina Cooper 40 5-9 • G • Fr. Cooper has given the Boilermakers a nice energy boost off the bench, mainly because she can be an impact player at both ends without making many mistakes. More than anyone — because everyone else was already playing big minutes — she stood to gain from the injuries, and she's taken advantage of the increased workload. She's a better offensive player than given credit for, with a jumper that's improved tremendously since she last played two years ago, and her length and athleticism make her solid defensively. Reserves On The Shelf Bree Horrocks 22 6-5 • C • Jr. Tiara Murphy 3 5-7 • G • So. GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 3 77
