S I G N & D I G I T A L G R A P H I C S • January 2017 • 47 Measuring On a printout of a vehicle template we like to note our measurements of the vehicle. By using the template we can clearly note where on the vehicle we're measuring, from point A to point B. For some of our quotes we're get- ting the measurements for an overall area that we're quoting a partial wrap on. For example, if a customer comes in with a utility bed truck and they're wanting a full wrap on just that bed we can take height and width measure- ments of the bed, note them, figure the square footage and give a customer a quote on the spot. If we're going to create a custom template, from photos of the customer's vehicle, we use these measurements to properly scale the photos. We take mea- surements of areas that are not distorted by the curve of the vehicle. This means the width of a door at a particular point, the height and width of a flat surface like a utility box, etc. A curved door will not give us a height that we can use to scale a flat photo. Take multiple measurements so you can reference multiple points for accuracy when scaling the photo in your design software. For common vehicles, like full size vans, Transit vans and pick-ups, we pre- print these templates and keep them in a binder at the front counter. This shaves off a few minutes at the counter and allows you to just grab the template and take it out on a clipboard for measuring. Sketching On our long-term fleet accounts we typically skip past the quote process and go straight to the sketching step. We still get vehicle photos and measurements, but they are already familiar with our pricing and are more concerned with conveying their ideas. Other than these repeat clients, we always work through the quote process with the customer to be sure they want to move forward before we start on any artwork. This isn't to say that we don't have to discuss their purpose for the wrap or to get a grip on the coverage by dis- cussing some of the design, but we don't do any proofs or sketches without some confirmation of an order. Once we have this assurance we'll use another template to sketch out ideas with the customer. Most people are visual and by using the template to note the information that the customer wants to include, and where on the vehicle it may fit best, it speeds along the process at the counter. By having the artwork already roughed out, prior to working in the computer, it We always work through the quote process with the customer to be sure they want to move for- ward before we start on any artwork.
