Staying on top of the data stream can be difficult, with onboard computers and telematics systems sending email alerts for every critical safety event, from speeding to harsh braking, hours-of- service violations and more. A growing number of fleets also use video event recorders. The technology captures additional data, risk observations and clips for review. Consumed by data, managers may not have time to respond quickly to risky driving behaviors and remediate with coaching and training. In the aftermath of an accident, plaintiff attorneys like- ly will seek punitive damages by proving that manage- ment knew – or should have known – of risks but failed to act in a timely manner. For these reasons and others, the demand for automat- ed risk management systems is growing. Analyzing performance Vnomics created its True Fuel system to predict and optimize the fuel performance of diesel-powered trucks. True Fuel is an Internet of Things system with "edge" computing and analytics. The edge in this case is an an- droid computing device installed in vehicles that captures real-time data to perform advanced fuel analysis. The edge device sits on top of the dashboard, or under it, with cable connections to both the vehicle's diagnos- tics port and a cellular modem the size of a hockey puck. As part of the installation, Vnomics configures the True Fuel data model to match the vehicle's engine, drivetrain, torque curve and other parameters. From the first ignition, a continuous stream of sensor and electronic control module data feeds the model, which uses "unsupervised" machine learning to determine the optimal amount of fuel the vehicle requires to do the work at any time, says Lloyd Palum, chief technology officer of Vnomics. More than 500,000 data points are collected per truck every month, and all of it is processed in real time by the edge device. The information then is transmitted to Vnomics' servers in the cloud. The technology gives real-time fuel coaching to drivers Vigillo sends driv- ers online training as- signments from J.J. Keller when its analysis of fleet CSA and telem- atics data indicates an area of risk. Vnomics' True Fuel system calculates a daily score for drivers that shows how they performed compared to their potential.
