These guns were made cheaply and in large quantities for the fur trade. Furs had to be stacked to the full height of the gun in order to trade for it. As a result, these guns were made with longer barrels so more furs were needed for the trade. Firefighters were able to limit the damage to the residence to within the chimney. Warm and cold temper- atures can cause danger- ous situations with the use of a solid woodburning appliance if operated under conditions which can contribute to creosote build up. Improper burning, including vapours from slow burning fires which flow through a cooler chimney, can deposit con- densation on the inside of the chimney to produce creosote. The chimney may build up creosote under warmer conditions when a chim- ney is damped down. If a chimney fire does occur in a chimney a WETT certified inspector must inspect the chimney. "They are all rated to do so much and once you have had a fire it takes away its ability to per- form," said DeBernardi. He said that depending on usage homeowners should be cleaning their chimneys from once a month to once a week. "People should never burn garbage in their wood burning appliances. Wood burning appliances are made for burning wood," he said. Firefighters douse chimney fire in time Business award nominations Time is limited to nominate Rideau Lakes businesses in a new business recognition program initiated by the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee.
