We en- dowed this basketball schol- arship to honor our parents' memory and to support that continued character in our teams." - Kyle Huske " G ibboney and Kyle Huske endowed e Leighton and Anne Rawles Huske Men's Basketball Scholarship as an ongoing memorial to their parents' devotion to the University and their love of Cavalier basketball. Many of their cherished family memories involve UVA sports, but basketball always has held a special place in their hearts. Like many longtime fans, their parents first fell in love with Cavalier Basketball in the early 1970s. "In our family, we grew up hearing stories about great UVA basketball players and knew that a UVA win could turn even the worst day around." e Huske sisters recall, "In the early days not all UVA games were on the radio in their Richmond home. Rather than miss the games, our parents piled us in our pajamas and sleeping bags into the back of the car and drove west until they could get a Charlottesville radio station that carried the game. en they pulled over on the side of the road to listen and cheer along. In later years, they attended home games at University Hall in addition to nearly all postseason games that included seeing UVA play in the Final Four and winning the 1976 ACC Tournament." Gibboney recalls, "For many years, we thought of ourselves as basketball orphans during the season because our parents le us with sitters so regularly to attend games or go to other events supporting the team." Eventually, they both followed in their father's steps and graduated from the University. Upon leaving Kyle at UVA for the first time as a student, her father instructed her that he was sending her to UVA to support UVA basketball and football. Studying was listed as a secondary priority. Leighton and Anne Rawles cher- ished their countless memories of UVA basketball and knew that watching the players grow as ath- letes and young men was a special experience. Gibboney and Kyle noted, "e history and traditions of the school enriched our expe- riences both as students and as a family for years." 2017 VAF GUIDE TO GIVING / 27
