very May in Chicago, NARCE provides our industry — and me personally — with a great opportunity to "take the temperature" of our business. We will have professionals from every part of the country at NARCE, along with nearly every vendor for our rinks. We'll have rink managers trading ideas, both in the classroom and during our social events. We'll have vendors answering questions about their latest innovations and their value to the industry. And we'll be trying to collect the latest and greatest ideas to share with those of you who can't be there. For eight years, STAR has promoted education and communication within the industry. We believe in spending our time and effort in championing the best in our business. We do this by collecting YOUR best ideas and spreading the message far and wide. Maybe you can't copy some of these ideas, but if you pick up one that will work for your facility, then we are all better for it. At this time of year, it's important to look back at this recent operating season, not only yours, but the season of anyone who will share information with you. Try and find out what worked for others, and see if you can duplicate those successes in your facility operation. There's plenty of information in this issue of RINK to help. Be sure to check out the piece on the economic impact of the Maysa Arena in Minot, North Dakota. Manager Chuck Emery made his business better by going through this procedure, and he provides some helpful hints for you to do the same. Spring also provides a time for most professionals to catch their breath after a long season. Did you thrive or just survive? What could you do to make your business and, more importantly, your life more successful next year? Take those steps and make those adjustments now so you don't spend another year constantly playing catch-up. We are looking forward to an exciting week with so many of you at NARCE. And if you couldn't join us this year, put it on your calendar for next year — NARCE 2009 will be back in Chicago from May 11th to 14th…just be prepared to share your best ideas! —Pat Kelleher, Chief Operating Officer, STAR Opening address 6 R INK MAGAZ INE may/June 2008 E 2009 Save the date for next year: May 11-14, 2009 in Chicago.
