MARCH 2017 THE WOLVERINE 11   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Lacrosse senior Tess Korten: The Glen Head, N.Y., native notched point No. 100 in her Michigan career with a goal in the Wolverines' home opener against James Madison Feb. 11. Though Michi- gan lost the game 18-6, Korten became the fourth Wolverine to reach 100 career points. All four are cur- rently seniors on the team. The attacker has 81 goals and 19 assists so far in her career, and has started every game she has played in at college. She was second on the team in goals (29) last season. Gymnastics junior Paige Zaziski: The Ches- ter field, Mich., product was named the Big Ten Event Spe- cialist of the Week for her per- formances in a road win at Mary- land Feb. 5. She scored a 9.875 in three separate events on the way to a team score for Michi- gan of 196.625, a season high in a road meet for the Wolverines. All three events were top- three finishes for Zaziski and she earned the Big Ten honor for the first time in her career. Swimming and Diving freshman Felix Auböck: The distance swim- mer from Vienna, Austria, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after he earned two victories in a meet against Ohio State Jan. 27. He won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:36.85, beating a former Big Ten champion. Auböck also won the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 4:24.14. Lacrosse senior Ian King: The Cincinnati native tied a school record for assists in a game with four in U-M's season-opening 13-8 vic- tory at Cleveland State Feb. 4. The senior attacker followed that per for mance up with five goals in the team's home opener, a 17-6 defeat of Lafayette Feb. 11. King led the team in goals as a sophomore and freshman, but missed a large portion of last year due to injury. Tennis sophomore Brienne Minor: The Mundelein, Ill., product was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week Jan. 31 for her role in Michigan's ITA National Team Indoor Championship qualifica- tion. She was 2-0 in both singles and doubles at the ITA Kick-Off Jan. 28-29 in Ann Arbor. Minor was 36-10 in singles play as a freshman last year. MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK KIM BARNES ARICO EARNS VICTORY NO. 100 Wi t h a n 8 0 - 5 4 v i c - tory over Northwestern Feb. 1, Michigan women's basketball coach K im Barnes Arico notched her 100th win as the Wolver- ines' head coach. Barnes Arico is just the second Michigan coach to reach the 100-win mark and has done it in the fewest number of games. She is behind only Sue Guevara, who coached the team from 1996-2003 and finished with a re- cord of 123-82. This sea- son, the Wolverines were sitting at 21-5 — the best record through 26 games in program history — as of Feb. 14. Michigan was No. 20 in the Associated Press poll that was re- leased Feb. 13. Barnes Arico's career record through 26 games of this season is 104-59 overall at Michigan, and her .638 winning percentage is the best in school history. Only Barnes Arico, Guevara and Kevin Borseth have winning records as head coach of the women's team. MICHIGAN FOOTBALL PRODUCES RECORD FIVE SUPER BOWL MVPS Following the New England Patriots' 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, quarterback Tom Brady was awarded his fourth Super Bowl MVP. The former Michigan quarterback has pro- pelled the school to a national record five Super Bowl MVP awards won by players who played at the school. Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and USC all sit in second place and have three Super Bowl MVP awards won by former players. Four of Michigan's awards have been won by Brady, while all of them have been won since the beginning of the 1996 NFL season. Former Michigan receiver Desmond Howard was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXXI after he had 244 combined return yards, including a 99-yard kick return touchdown, to propel the Green Bay Packers to victory over New England. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS 14 EVENTS AGAINST MSU The Michigan women's swimming and diving team pulled off victo- ries in every event during their season-ending dual meet at Michigan State. The Wolverines came away from the meet with a 173-80 win to cap an undefeated regular-season conference record. Three freshmen — Annalisa Perez, Monica Babits and Jacqui Scha- fer — all recorded their first individual event wins during the meet. Sophomore Yirong Bi came away with two individual victories as well, earning her Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors for the second time this season. The Wolverines won the top three spots in the 50-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley. — Leland Mitchinson Barnes Arico has guided the women's basket- ball team to the best 26-game start (21-5) in program history and boasted a career mark of 104-59 (.638 winning percentage) as of Feb. 14.
