MARCH 2017 THE WOLVERINE 105   BASKETBALL RECRUITING added. "I take my hat off to East Eng- lish for a job well done, for staying poised. Dave DeJulius made some big shots. We're up six, and he made a big shot, from almost half court, to cut it to three. "We try to shoot the ball, too, and my guys were really focused. They really wanted this win. They stuck to the game plan, but they have two players [DeJulius and 2017 three-star guard Greg Elliott] who are high majors, and they made some plays down the stretch." DeJulius scored 23 in a 102-64 win over Detroit Cody Feb. 7. U-M head coach John Beilein watched him score 24 in an 89-72 victory over De- troit Osborn Jan. 31, including 11 in the first quarter (three triples) to give East English a 21-20 lead. JUNIOR TARGET ROBBY CARMODY BATTLES THROUGH INJURY Michigan offered class of 2018 guard/wing Robby Carmody of Mars (Pa.) High last summer, and the 6-4 junior has continued to improve. Purdue, Michigan, Northwestern and Xavier are among those who have offered, and the Wolverines are right in the thick of the battle, ac- cording to his father and coach, Rob Carmody Sr. "Michigan is still involved and is high on his list," he reported in late January. "Overall, he is averaging 25.3 points and 12.4 rebounds per game, along with five assists and five steals per game [as of Jan. 27]." That included 33 points and 13 rebounds in league play before he injured his ankle, spraining it by landing on a foot and turning it in mid-January. He returned to the court in early February. "At the time of his injury, we were 10-2 with our only losses coming out of state," Carmody Sr. said. "He is the only player on this year's roster with any varsity experience. … His leadership and toughness have been excellent." Mars was still in the hunt for a league title at 13-8 overall as of Feb. 12. Recruiting has slowed down a bit for Carmody with college programs in the middle of their seasons, Car- mody Jr. told BlueandGold.com re- cently. Notre Dame is one of the pro- grams as high on his list as Michigan, and he's been watching the Fighting Irish closely. "I love Notre Dame because of ev- erything they have to offer and the relationship I have with the coaches," Carmody said. "My interest level is high because of everything they have to offer academically, athletically and the network after school." He's said the same about the Wol- verines in the recent past. At this point, however, there are no leaders. " We d o n o t h a v e a n y t h i n g planned [in terms of visits] until we figure out where we will be as far as the playoffs go," Carmody Sr. said. "We finished our regular season on Feb. 10, and the play- offs will begin the following week. Once that is set, we will have a bet- ter idea of the time we have to get out to see schools. "There's no time frame for a com- mitment other than before the start of next season. He does wish to sign in November so he can completely focus on his senior year." CLASS OF 2018 NOTES Four-star junior shooting guard Cormac Ryan (6-5, Rivals' No. 63 junior nationally) of Milton (Mass.) Academy has visited Michigan twice, and he's been out to see several other schools this winter. "After visiting Stanford, Villanova, Yale and Pennsylvania earlier this winter, the 6-5 scorer from Mas- sachusetts took in Northwestern's home win over Indiana [Jan. 29]," Rivals reported. "One of the best shooters in the class of 2018, Ryan has also drawn significant interest from Notre Dame and Michigan, among others." Rivals reports there are no plans for future visits and no timetable for setting a final list, but to ex- pect Ryan to eventually lock in on programs that "feature high level academics to go along with high level hoops." Another Michigan offeree, Colum- bus, Ohio, standout Jerome Hunter (6-7, Rivals' No. 79 junior nationally), visited Pittsburgh in January. "The visit was great," Hunter told Panther-Lair.com. "That was when Coach [Kevin] Stallings offered me. They had a big presentation for how they would use me and feature me in their system." Hunter said Xavier, Purdue and Michigan were also aggressively re- cruiting him. "Most of the schools like my versa- tility," he said. Hunter visited Michigan last fall to pick up his offer. Finally, Michigan assistant Jeff Meyer was in Katy, Texas, recently to see Tompkins High School wing Jamal Bieniemy (6-5, No. 132 player in the country). Bieniemy is consid- ered a Caris LeVert type in reference to U-M's former standout, now with the Brooklyn Nets. "Since the summer I have worked on the three ball and mid-range jumper … also my lateral quickness and explosiveness," he told Endless- Motor.com. Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, New Mexico, Houston and Tulsa have offered, while Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan, UCLA and Creighton are showing interest. "Oklahoma State and Creighton have been recruiting me the hard- est," he said in early February. "I'm heading to Oklahoma State on Feb. 18. That's all I have lined up as of now." Expect Michigan to pick up the in- terest. ❏ On The Web For regular reports on Michigan basketball recruiting plus videos of U-M commitments and targets visit TheWolverine.com.
