110 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2017   MICHIGAN IN THE PROS Alan Branch Is Also A New England Super Bowl Champion BY CHRIS BALAS F ormer Michigan quarterback Tom Brady might have been the MVP of Super Bowl LI, but he won't be the only former Wolverine to receive a ring. Former U-M defensive tackle Alan Branch (2004-06) made a key fumble recovery in the fourth quarter that helped the Patriots come back. New England was down 16 when Pats linebacker Dont'a Hightower stripped Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan with 8:31 remaining. Branch jumped on the ball in the scrum with the help of fellow Pats defender Rob Ninkovich. "I was trying to scoop it out, but I couldn't move my arm," Branch said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "Rob started to punch the ball where it was inside my breadbasket. He punched it just enough where it spit up in front of my belly and I was able to cover it up. "I actually thought he was another offensive lineman trying to get the ball out, so I was throwing a couple of elbows down there trying to make sure no one was getting it." Brady led the Patriots to a touch- down and a two-point conversion to make it 28-20 with 5:56 remaining, and he capped the comeback with another scoring drive and two-point conversion in addition an overtime touchdown march. Branch finished the game with three tackles (one solo), including half a sack, in addition to his fumble recovery.
