R V M A N U F A C T U R E R S RUVs on the Rise Thor's 'new category' motorhomes are making solid inroads with a new generation of RVer. By Steve Bibler 24 • RV PRO • March 2017 rv-pro.com I t's not every day a new category of RV debuts, so when Thor Motor Coach introduced the first "recreational utility vehicle" (RUV) at the 2013 Elkhart County Open House it was met with a great deal of fanfare. That year, TMC designed and began manufacturing the Class A-style Axis and Vegas motorhomes on a Ford E-350 chassis more commonly associated with Class C motorhomes – marking an industry first. Sized like a large SUV (hence the name), the first RUVs measured just a bit longer than 25 feet, 8 feet wide and 11 feet tall, allowing them to fit into many spaces where traditional RVs couldn't go. Thor has touted its RUVs, which debuted in 2013, as being a new category of motorhome.
