So the Bowden, Iowa-based company debuted the Recon 21K fifth wheel hitch – the latest in the supplier's Premier Series and Hijacker family that was specifically designed to help lighten the load involved. The Recon features a lighter-weight geometric design that fits industry standard bed rails. That design allows users to easily separate the hitch into two pieces, making installation and removal quick and easy. "The big things for some folks that are traveling is that they don't want to leave that hitch in there all the time, and they're tired of picking up a 150- to 200-pound hitch," says Demco's Greg Emerson. "With (the Recon), you pull a pin out, the head comes off – that's 45 pounds – and I can pick up the base with the other hand – that's 50 – and I can just carry it out of the truck." Rated at 21K, the head of the hitch and base disconnect to allow the hitch to be easily removed from the bed of the truck. The Recon features include a latch handle that's built-in, so no additional levers or rods are needed to hook or unhook; a dual-articulation head for easy hookup and release on uneven terrain; a wrap-around jaw for easy hookup with a lock bar for a stronger, safer towing experience; and three built-in height adjustments for ease of use. Notably, because the Recon utilizes a standard fifth wheel head design, no adapter plates or pin box modifications are needed. The hitch is made with pride in the U.S.A. The hitch's low overall weight and profile have made it a hot item for dealers during its debut season, according to Emerson, who represents Demco products in the Southeast and South- central regions. "These things are just flying," he says. "And the reason they are is because of the price-point, the light weight, and being able to pull them in and out more easily." What impressed RV PRO: Despite its lower overall weight and smaller footprint, compared to other contemporary hitches on the market, the Recon 21K rating puts it in the heavyweight class. Allowing the head of the hitch to disconnect from the base for easy removal provides an additional plus for this ver- satile product. www.demco-products.com 68 • RV PRO • March 2017 rv-pro.com Distributor Best of Show 21K Rated Fifth Wheel Hitch
