The Hannah had been carrying emigrants to Que- bec when it struck a reef of ice that ripped open the hull of the ship. Moments after the accident crew members, including the captain, took a life boat and abandoned the wreck leaving the ship to sink in the icy waters. Many of the survivors of The Hannah made their way to set- tle on The Mountain in Westport.
