GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 4 12 David Bloudia is enjoying a bit of time off, at least from competitive diving. The four-time Olympic medalist, including the gold in the 10-meter platform in the 2012 Summer Games, is staying busy these days as a realtor for Keller Williams in Lafayette and on his speaking tour. Boudia, a former Boilermaker and author of the au- tobiography, "Greater Than Gold," was a guest on the Feb. 10 "Gold and Black LIVE." Q. What is life like as an Olympian? Boudia: "When I get home, it doesn't matter. My daughter 'Kota couldn't care less. She'll put (a medal) on and play with it. But my wife, she's proud of me, but I'm dad and husband when I get home. It comes like this, a wave of it, and the shelf life of an Olympian is only so long, especially around here. This is the hometown, where we live, and I spent eight years here training, going to school and living. You get a little more recognized, but it's kind of nice sometimes, you go to the other side of the country and they couldn't care less." Q. Let's end the speculation: Will you compete in the 2020 Tokyo Games? Boudia: "How about we keep the anticipation going? (laughter) But seriously, as soon as I was done with my individual event in Rio, the very first question you get af- ter congratulations (and), 'How do you feel?' is 'Will you go on for another Olympics?' And I'm like, 'Let me enjoy this medal really fast, let me sit on this.' "But I haven't been in the pool, haven't done a dive, since Rio, so about six months. The transition, we'll see what that looks like. My family and I will sit down and see what's best for us. I'm healthy. Diving has been a big part of my life and we've had some success in it, so I don't know if we can call it quits yet or if it's time." Q. But soon, you'll hit a go or no-go point, right, where you must decide? Boudia: "More or less. I can't wait until 2019 in the fall (to decide) that I want to go to another Olympic Games, because I won't be ready by August, especially right now. I put on a suit and I thought, 'Man, this is a little tighter than it used to be.' I have to make sure I'm going to be in shape. But by this fall, I'll make a decision by then on what I'm going to do, but right now I'll sit on it. I'm enjoying this little break and I'm getting into some new adventures." Q. Among those are real estate, plus your speak- ing tour. So you're staying busy. Boudia: "I get this question all the time, 'What do you do?' And now I can say I'm in real estate and try to buy and sell real estate for people. But also I feel like I've put on five different hats and that's what I love about it. I like to try to juggle and balance this career. So I want to be able to do this, with my shelf life as an Olympian, as much as possible. My book has helped a lot. But speaking at first, you get in front of an audience and you have a lot of doubt. But after you do it a while, it becomes fun to be able to tell your story. It's booked up way more than I thought. I thought I'd get one (speaking date) here or there, but I have a substantial speaking schedule this year. I don't know how long it'll last but I'm going to try to take advantage of it and share my story." — As told to Gold and Black Boiler Index
