GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 4 54 Chris Barclay, RBs A stud running back at Wake Forest — he's still the school's all-time lead- ing rusher — Barclay has transferred his on-field knowledge to molding some productive backs. In only his second full-time coaching job at Marshall, Barclay helped Devon Johnson convert from a tight end into a back who rushed for 1,767 yards in 2014, the school's single-season mark. "He gets to know how we learn. He knows that every other player learns different, so he tries to coach us on how we learn," said Johnson, now with the Carolina Pan- thers. "Everything that he taught me, I learned so quick because of the way he coaches. That's what amazing coaches do. If they can show you one time and you can do it, that's all (props) on the coaches because I had plenty of coaches but sometimes I wouldn't be able to get it until the third or the fourth time. But I got it the first time with him." Brian Brohm, QBs Though he only has one year of coaching experience, Brohm has load- ed up on playing experience at a posi- tion that may require more knowledge than all the rest. He followed a highly successful college career as a quarter- back at Louisville with eight seasons as a pro, including four years as an NFL backup. That helps him relate to players — they know he's just been in the pocket with defenders looking to light him up — and when he demonstrates footwork or certain technique, he looks fluid. "It's cool having a perspective fresh out of the game," Purdue's returning starting QB David Blough said. "(He) kind of has this demeanor about him when he walks in the room, and it's, 'Hey, it's time to work.' I like that a lot about him. He's been great to me so far, coach- ing and challenging us. We're watching film, and he'll just call on somebody at a random time, you better know the answer. It's good. He's challenging us and pushing us to be better than we are." Assistant coach headshots by Tom Campbell Staff Complete Tom Campbell First-year coach Jeff Brohm completed his staff in early February when he shifted Chris Barclay from offensive quality control to running backs coach. The staff includes five coaches who have coordinator titles and each likely will be involved in game-planning. But on Saturdays, it'll be Jeff Brohm calling the plays on offense and Nick Holt on defense.
