Ask anyone from any generation to name three rappers they know, and the name of Snoop Doggy Dogg is almost certain to be one of the first to come up. Many of us millennials grew up to the unmistakably super smooth sound of Snoop's voice and stylish delivery of his raps, forever backed by some of Dr. Dre and Warren G's most popular 'G Funk' beats. His 1993 LP Doggystyle became an instant classic with a multitude of hit singles including 'Gin & Juice', 'Who Am I (What's My Name?)' and of course 'Gz & Hustlas'. It is these tracks, along with the Pharrell Williams produced track 'Drop It Like It's Hot' that the 'Big Bow Wow' is most commonly known for. Having briefly become Snoop Lion following a Rasta revelation a few years ago, Snoop Dogg is now back, with Neva Left, being a firm indicator that he is coming back to his dazzling best. With features from East Coast stalwarts such as KRS-One, Method Man & Red- man, along with tracks that pay hom- age to Wu-Tang & A Tribe Called Quest classics, there is so much goodness to take in. The standout track, 'Vapors', shares its subject matter with a classic Biz Markie track, it has Snoop recounting several stories in the throwback 'Slick Rick' style of 'Lodi Dodi'. For the true beat connois- seurs, I'm sure there is a veritable feast of old soul and funk samples that will have you jamming all day long. Thank You 4 Your service A Tribe Called Quest The hip hop & rnb on our playlist this month Tizzy Gang is headed up by Lewisham MC Merky Ace. Alongside him is Canada's Tre Mission, who played a big role in getting the duo more exposure overseas. Do not get it twisted, Prodigy was the same as 2Pac. He was a legend in the rap game, and he spoke the truth in an effort to uplift his people in the face of a harsh reality. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: TIZZY GANG Prodigy was a massive force in shaping hip hop and being the epitome of the New York sound. He was responsible for teaching the world about the 'Hell on Earth' of the streets of NYC. As he grew as an artist, he became disillusioned with the music industry and the way in which it was controlled by powerful people with often dubious motives. He brought to light that music and fashion are used as a means to control people, often to the degradation and detriment of black people. Some say he died from sickle cell, some say he died for his beliefs. One thing's for sure, he lived a life most won't and he said things most rappers don't. Together they have just dropped their first crew release, Opps Next Door Vol 1. Featuring a number of heavyweight productions from both Tre and Merky (under his beatmaking alias Splurt Diablo), the album showcases the talents of a raft of spitters, including Nasty Jack, Cadell, Vic Santoro and MIK. The sound straddles rap and grime, and brings together the talents of artists who are widely recognised in their own right, for a classic crew cut.
