As the Wu Tang's second LP Wu-Tang Forever celebrates its 20th anniversary we are reminded why it is and always will be the ultimate hip hop album. Following the release of her Mode EP in spring this year, the brummy-born and now London- based rapper Lady Leshurr has cemented her place as one of the most prominent vocalists in contemporary UK music. Consider a band that comes through like the Hot 8 Brass Band, but with an extra strong twist of American inspiration. Combining a battle MC's razor-sharp lyrical wit with a solid grasp of the grime sound (since 2009), Leshurr has developed a reputation as an artist with a distinctive identity of her own - not tied down to any one vibe or scene. A recent performance at London's Field Day festival, alongside the likes of Abra, Flying Lotus and Aphex Twin, demonstrates the extent to which she's managed to step outside of grime's normal milieu. In fact, she was just about the only British rapper on the line-up, besides Loyle Carner. It was her series of the 'Queen's Speech' freestyles in 2015 that initially brought her to the attention of a wider audience. However, when 'Number 4' in the series became a viral sensation (it's since racked up nearly 43M views), major labels obviously started to take note. Now, with Sony subsidiary RCA Records behind her, the 28-year-old has the opportunity to really and truly represent for all the ladies and our beloved hustle and bustle nation.
