TRACK OF THE MONTH: PROTOTYPE COMEBACKS HARD The Manchester d&b icon passed away suddenly. Landing at the end of last month, the legendary Prototype Recordings came back into the fray with a huge VIP mix of Drumsound & Bassline Smith's classic cut 'The Odyssey'. It was one of those labels that changed the game. Grooverider opened Prototype back in '93 and since remained a vital part of drum & bass' foundations. The imprint was responsible for a huge records, many kickstarting the careers of some of the scene's big guns. It's been a decade since their last release - but they have returned with the elusive dubplate that been in high demand. Simultaneously capturing nostalgic vibes with a fresh kick, it's the perfect tune for Prototype to comeback with. It's been such a long time, but, Prototype - we're glad you're back. The drum & bass community was hit hard with the sudden passing of Marcus Kaye, more commonly known as Marcus Intalex. The Soul:R label head's passing was met with an instant outpouring of tributes and well wishes from a huge range of artists; a sign of just how influential and important Marcus was to the scene. It's not often a producer comes around with as much talent as Marcus Intalex. His signature rolling, liquid groove has been the basis of a series of bangers over the years. It's not just been through production that he has made a massive impact on drum and bass. He was a pioneer for the genre in the north of the country, putting on parties in Manchester in the early days when no-one else would. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and all the Soul:R team; as a tribute we dedicate our playlist this month to some of our favourite Intalex tunes. NEWS: RIP THE LEGEND, MARCUS INTALEX ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DOMINATOR Another legend was lost in the drum & bass world, with the sudden passing of jump up don, Dominator on June 8th. The Suffolk based producer had announced that he was diagnosed with cancer just 5 days before it took his life, taking a much loved member of the scene. He was one of the fastest rising stars in the world of jump up. He captured the attention of many with his style that was every bit as futuristic as it was nostalgic of the history. Brought into the fray back in 2011, by none other than Grooverider, it didn't take long before he was on top form. His production mastery saw him release on Low Down Deep, Biological Beats and more - before launching his own D-Stortion last year. He had the support from many of d&b's top artists and was earmarked as a future legend in the game. His death came far too soon and has hit the jump up community hard. Once news broke many DJ's including Friction, Heist, & Turno paid their respects to their peer, mentor and friend. RIP Dominator. 36 ISSUE 100 / 2017 DRUM & BASS PLAYLIST The drum and bass on our playlist this month How You Make Me Feel Marcus Intalex & ST Files Temperance Marcus Intalex I Like It (Remix) Da Intalex Universe Marcus Intalex & ST Files
