66 SUPER SPOTLIGHT Being innovative is a must in the golf industry. "Otherwise you sink fast in this business," said Gerald Flaherty, golf course superintendent at The Valley Club in Hailey, Idaho. Flaherty believes in that maxim. It could be something simple like making a quick little piece of equipment or part of an attachment for one of your mowers. "I read the magazines and see some of the things guys are doing on Twitter," Flaherty said, "and I think that's really a good idea. I cannot believe I never thought of that. Superintendents are pretty innovative. They're real creative thinkers, because you have to be. "Money and time is always an issue," he said. "There's always that first foursome of golfers who want to get on the course or are chasing you around the course. And management always wants you to do things faster and cheaper." TRACKING COSTS Innovative thinking led Flaherty and Jaime Sharp, head golf professional at The Valley Club, to create An ambitious upgrade is planned for The Valley Club in Hailey, Idaho.
