5 DENVER CATHOLIC | MARCH 11-24, 2017 ATTENTION MEN OF THE ARCHDIOCESE JOIN THE COLORADO KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CALL 1-844-265-6321 or visit WWW.COLORADOKOFC.ORG Dear Brother Knights of Columbus, The Church of Northern Colorado is greatly blessed by the presence of the Knights of Columbus! Knights are Catholic men who are committed to charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The unity of brotherhood is an important encouragement in these challenging times when the truth of the Gospel is denied, and that which is evil is now proclaimed to be good. When we stand with fellow believers, with one heart and mind, our timid hearts grow strong. Indeed, the Holy Spirit who makes that unity possible is also the one who helps us to not be afraid. As the apostles themselves learned and could testify: God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and perfect love casts out fear. (Rom 5:5, lJn 4: 18) In this Year of Mercy may we ever open our hearts to the mercy of the Father and exercise the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Thank you for your committed and loyal service to the Church in her many parishes and apostolic ministries. The Knights of Columbus offer a wonderful example of faith working through love (Gal 5:6), and this service contributes to the Church's witness to the world. I encourage men to consider joining the Knights of Columbus in order to build-up the domestic church and strengthen our parishes. May the Lord abundantly bless you and your families! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, S.T.L. Jason Thuerauf & Principal St. Mary Patrice Appreciation – Thursday, March 16 complicate or worsen them if undiag- nosed or untreated. Some conditions that would need thorough testing and treatment are depression, diabetes, hypertension, bone mineral density, kidney or liver impairment, lupus and endometriosis. "Endometriosis is another import- ant thing to know, but if it's not diag- nosed, it could be pre-cancerous, and putting more hormones [in your body] could make it worse and lead to poten- tial cancer," Haas said. "I would want to be followed fully by a physician who can evaluate all those things in the o¡ce…if I had underlying issues that put me at risk. And I don't know how a pharmacist will be able to comprehensively handle all of that," Haas continued. Lynn Grandon, director of the Respect Life o¡ce at the Catholic Chari- ties in the Archdiocese of Denver, agreed that easier access to the pill can have damaging e'ects on women's health. "The more people can easily get it, the more women will see the physical e'ects of the pill, which are documented," Gran- don said. "I'm interested to see what this training will be for pharmacists." Grandon also noted the moral danger of contraception that will con- tinue to damage culture as a result of easier access to the pill. "It's not just bad because contracep- tion is bad, but if we look back on what's happened in our society in the past 50 years, we've had serious damage in our own society. All the predictions of Pope Paul VI [inªHumanae Vitae,ª"on human life"] came true, [when] contraception was introduced," Grandon said. According to the Denver Post, phar- macists are not required to participate, including those who have conscience objections, which is great news for Catholic pharmacists. In addition to training, pharmacists will also be required to have liability insurance and inform the patient's doctor when prescribing birth control. Girls under 18 will not be eligible. of the Church," according to their web- site, and is a platform where the femi- nine has a say. Bachiochi additionally noted that "Mary, the Mother of God, is heralded by the Catholic Church as the single greatest human that has ever lived," and that several female saints are Doctors of the Church. "The greatest among us are not the clerics, but the saints," Bachiochi said. The Debate proves that this is a timely opportunity, even a call, for women to unite with one another on their common beliefs — the dignity and equal rights of women — rather than divisive issues. DRAWING CLOSE TO MARY With so many talking about feminism and what it means to be a woman, it's important to remember the greatest example of the "feminine genius" that ever lived: the Blessed Virgin Mary. Angela Igielinski, co-chair of the Denver Catholic Women's Conference, hopes that the event on March 25 will be a place where women rediscover their identity. "The hope is to help women discover who they are in Christ…and to really continue our conversions to Jesus," Igielinski said. The retreat, which is a parish initia- tive, is titled, "Feminine Authenticity — The Perfect Yes!" The day will o'er an opportunity for adoration, confes- sion and talks and is expecting up to 200 women to attend. The theme will focus on Marian spirituality and Luke 1:38, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done unto me according to your word," to encourage retreatants to meditate on Mary's "fiat" and apply it to their lives. With Mary at the helm of heralding authentic femininity, all women can "model her humility and obedience to God," as the conference's website says, and remember that the most important way to change culture is first by prayer. Only after praying will we be able to o'er words of love, truth and com- passion to both men and women in our culture. "We have to talk to them, we have to be there, we have to pray," Igielinski said. For more information on the con- ference, or so register to attend, visit denvercatholicconference.com/about.
