The Seeley's Bay Retirement Home got back to operation last week after lengthy restora- tions after a fire forced residents to spend Decem- ber, January and February at the Comfort Inn in Gananoque. A fire in November, which started in the base- ment of the main building, caused smoke damage throughout the building. Residents came back last Tuesday to familiar surroundings which included newly painted walls and some upgrades including brand new upholstered furniture and completely refinished din- ing room chairs. The return was delayed after some false starts in the restoration. After everything was restored the process of cleaning had to begin again after vents to the upstairs weren't closed while workers were dry-ice sandblasting beams down- stairs. Members of the See- ley's Bay area community continued their connection with the residents while they were away during the Christmas season and afterwards with visits from the Lions Club, the Thursday, March 16, 2017 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 126, No. 10 $1 incl. tax Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Residents of the Seeley's Bay Retirement Home got back home last week after restoration of the facility was delayed from a fire in late November. A helicopter and ground search evolved to an underwater search on Saturday and Sunday when OPP divers located the men and their vehicle, a 70's-era open top Bron- co-style, in the lake. The OPP began the search on Friday night after their families report- ed them mising after they failed to return from a trip to the Big Rideau Lake Association's Cow Island where they were going to check on a dock. The two will be widely missed in the community. Mike Carty was the third youngest of a family of eight, and grew up on the family farm south of Elgin. After retiring from farming, he sold the farm and he and his wife Ginny moved to Portland. He worked for Thompson Electric in Seeley's Bay, "He was very much an outdoors person and par- ticularly since he retired, he did a lot of fishing," said his younger sister Mary. Carty was an active member of the St. Colum- banus parish in Elgin and enjoyed volunteering in the community, including for Portland's Skate the Lake. "He was very commu- nity involved, a friend to all. He helped out a lot of people," said his sister. Family and friends can pay their respects Friday at the Scotland Funeral Home in Elgin from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.. The funeral will be held Saturday at the St. Colum- banus Church in Elgin at 11 a.m. He leaves behind his wife Ginny, a daughter Jennifer, and sons Jeremy (Mary Elaine), Ryan (Ami) and grandchildren; Michaela, Teresa, Kendra, Aleisha, Nick, Finnegan, Marin and Aubrey. The United Counties of Leeds Grenville informed residents of Mountainview Manor in Westport last week that they have had enough of their direct complaints about fellow tenants. Last week in a letter sent to residents of the r e n t - g e a r e d - t o - i n c o m e building management sug- gested residents should contact police to address issues with fellow tenants. "As the Landlord any matters brought forward must be able to be proven they were conducted by another Tenant," stated the letter. The policy has been that residents filing a com- plaint would have to do so through the OPP and be prepared to testify either in court or in front of a rental tribunal. Now, the United Coun- ties has informed residents that tenant versus tenant complaints will be handled by the Landlord and Ten- ant Board. A tenant, who wishes to remain anony- mous, gave the Review- Mirror a copy of the letter last week. "The complaints we have received to date are tenant versus tenant com- plaints. If these matters continue, we will have no choice but to issue 'N5 Notice to Terminate Your Tenancy" notices to all parties involved in an inci- dent. The Landlord and Tenant board would then decide the outcome for each Tenant," it stated.
