www.ifrec.org Thanks to a donation from the Idaho Falls Community Pathways organization, the Parks Division installed a new outdoor Dero bike repair station on the Eastbank of the River Walk. • • Thanks to assistance from the Public Works Department, the lower road at the South Tourist Park parking area was renovated and resurfaced. • • Reconfigured the Lincoln Park tennis courts to six (6) new pickle ball courts. • • Assisted with the 2nd annual Festival of Lights at Freeman Park where more than 8,000 vehicles drove through the park. • • Water conservation and recycling efforts were a priority in 2016 which included adding a pump station at Ryder Park for phase II development and adjusting watering schedules and irrigation audits at Pinecrest and Sand Creek Golf Courses. HORTICULTURE AND URBAN FORESTRY The Horticulture and Urban Forestry section of the Parks Division manages more than 17,000 public trees in city parks and street rights-of-way. This section also maintains, grows, and plants flowers and plants for more than 150 flower and landscape beds and 120 flower baskets that are located in city parks and public spaces. Services and Programs • • Received the Tree City U.S.A. designation from the Arbor Day Foundation for the 24th year and was selected to receive the Growth Award in 2016. Arbor Day was held on May 12, 2016 where volunteers and staff worked on the west side of the river planting trees and flowers. • • Pruned 647 trees, treated 800+ trees, planted 234 potted trees, and transplanted 38 trees in 2016. Also planted three (3) large spruce trees by the gateway monument sign on Broadway Street. • • Staff worked closely with the Shade Tree Committee to amend the shade tree ordinance that was adopted by City Council. • • Upgraded computers to help with the inventory and maintenance of city trees. • • Implemented the Tree Safety Inspection Program and Integrated Pest Management Program which assesses trees in the city that may need to be removed, pruned, and applied chemical control on trees that could be a hazard whether they are damaged by weather, age or pests. • • Removed 157 trees from city property that were dead, diseased, or potentially dangerous. • • Manages the tree farm at Sandy Downs and performs rotational pruning for tree health and safety of both trees in city parks and in the public street rights-of-way. • • Researched and purchased 120 self-watering flower baskets that will reduce man-hours in 2017 through the elimination of weekend watering. Thanks to this new water conservation practice, the section should only have to water the baskets three (3) times a week instead of every day. 4 NEW BIKE REPAIR STATION
