America signs a definitive merger agree- ment with Top of the World, a supplier of collegiate headwear in the U.S. The merger creates a single company. With the merger, J. America co- founder Jeff Fenech leads the company's wholesale blanks division. The division supplies blanks under the J. America label to domestic wholesale distributors and apparel decorators. Top of the World president Scott Shuler now leads the company's li- censed apparel and headwear opera- tions as president of the licensed divi- sion. "This merger allows a single company to better leverage our brand, secure addi- tional product offerings, and deepen our supplier relationships," states Shuler. The merged company features four distribution facilities in Michigan and Oklahoma, a design center in Ohio, a sales office in North Carolina, and a sourcing office in Hong Kong. Gildan Announces Completion of Ameri- can Apparel Acquisition MONTREAL—Gildan completes the acquisition of American Apparel. The announcement comes as the latest development in an ongoing process by the company to acquire the brand. In early Jan. 2017, Gildan emerged as the winner in a New York court-supervised bankruptcy auction to acquire the American Apparel brand and a select set of assets including manufacturing equipment.
