31ST SCORE SAN FELIPE 250 GUIDE By Score Journal Staff One of the many reasons why the SCORE San Felipe 250 is one of the oldest and most iconic races in the SCORE racing series, is because tourists, fans, and racers have come to love the beauty of the area. Many racing careers began by individuals and families who visited here, volunteered to pit for the SCORE San Felipe 250 and got hooked on off-road racing. In fact, many SCORE racers have participated in the race since its beginning and continue to enjoy the town and its splendor. Now celebrating its 31st anniversary the SCORE San Felipe 250 is one of the major attractions in the area, but people often come weeks prior to the race or stay weeks after the event, to enjoy what this area has to offer. Getting To San Felipe Via Mexicali Most visitors to San Felipe come via San Diego, California on Interstate 8 and head south on California Route 111 to the border in Mexicali. San Felipe is two hours south of Mexicali on Mexico’s Route 5. Although you don’t need a passport to get into Mexico, you will need one to enter back into the United States. It’s also recommended that you carry proof of vehicle ownership if you plan to drive your own vehicle. It is also highly recommended to purchase Mexican auto insurance. Many visitors don’t realize that their insurance policies don’t cover driving their vehicle into another country. SCORE’s TIP: Information on how to do this is available from companies such as Instant Mexico Auto Insurance. www.instant-mex-auto-insur.com. First Stop Mexicali Mexicali is a great place to visit on your way to the SCORE San Felipe 250. Whether it's for the day or an extended stay, the city is the State capital and is the location where many “snowbirds” from the U.S. and Canada come to stay for the winter. With an abundance of off-roading trails, beautiful hotels, and great pheasant hunting, Mexicali can be a great place to start your SCORE San Felipe 250 adventure. SCORE’s Tip: Get hotel information from 3-5 star accommodations at www.descubrebajacalifornia.com The city of Mexicali is also renowned for its modern medical and health facilities. In fact, it’s sports medicine facilities are where players such as Bart Star of the Green Bay Packers visits, as well as hockey legend Phil Esposito. If you’re expecting excellent Mexican cuisine, you’ll get that in Mexicali, but many also come for a taste of the best Asian cuisine south of San Francisco. Mexicali has a largest Asian community in all of Mexico and thus has more than over 100 restaurants serving award-winning Asian cuisine. SCORE’s TIP: SCORE CEO/President Roger Norman’s favorite restaurant in town is Yokoihua. Letter From The Mayor of Mexicali I want to welcome everyone to our municipality of Mexicali, which is privileged by its geographical location, the quality of its services, and the warmth of its inhabitants. Without a doubt, the economic development of Baja California, and specifically Mexicali and San Felipe, has given us the opportunity to attract national and foreign investment, plus consolidating us as a business and retirement destination. Because of our proximity to the states of California, Arizona and Nevada, our destinations are favorites of tourists from the U.S. who come and visit us, and return year after year. Therefore, I want to welcome all of the racers, their families, and representatives of the sport of off-road racing, both to Mexicali as well as to San Felipe on the occasion of the 31st Anniversary of the Score San Felipe 250. We invite you to return soon, and I remind you that now is the moment to invest and enjoy in San Felipe. -MAYOR GUSTAVO SÁNCHEZ OF MEXICALI San Felipe Driving south from Mexicali will get you to the town of San Felipe, which is located on the east side of the Baja Peninsula. Like Mexicali, San Felipe also has many top rated hotels offering a number of great places to stay. SCORE’s TIP: For a list of hotels, check out the Discover Baja California website and see the hotel listings here. POINTS OF INTEREST IN SAN FELIPE Take a Walk on the Malecon Many spend time people-watching or enjoying the street performers on the Malecon boardwalk. During the day, people stroll the Malecon to eat or shop. At night the people are ready to check out the party/bar scene. At the northern tip of the Malecon, there’s a small bluff. Walk up to the Virgin of Guadalupe Shrine at the top and get the 360-degree view. To the north, there is a lighthouse and to the south, you can see the whole village and the beach. Pristine Beaches There are miles of pristine beach both north and south of San Felipe. The beach is ideal for long walks, and the sea is usually quiet and warm enough for a swim all year round. You can also enjoy riding a variety of water vehicles such as jet-skis or a banana float, or simply do nothing but relax and enjoy the sun. Puertecitos About 50 miles south of San Felipe is the little privately owned beach town of Puertocitos. There are sulfur hot springs and a really nice inlet beach. You can swim off the rocky area near the hot springs; you will see lots of fish. This is also a good place to bring fins, mask, and a snorkel, but area residents recommend going out at high tide and when the winds are calm. Fishing Sport fishing is big in San Felipe. So just south of the Malecon is San Felipe’s marina where you can charter a boat and go on a fishing adventure for the day. Golf The Las Caras De Mexico is a professional 18 hole golf course located in the resort area of El Dorado Ranch, seven miles north of downtown San Felipe. The golf course has spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez and the Sierra San Pedro Martir Mountain Range. You can also see Mt. Diablo, the highest point in Baja at about 10,000 feet. You can sign up for golfing at the Pavilion golf shop in La Ventana del Mar and enjoy a wonderful meal at the Pavilion Restaurant. Food As you would imagine, any fishing town near the ocean has some of the best seafood around, and San Felipe has a variety of restaurants serving fresh seafood. Some of these include: George’s Hotel & Restaurant Bar Hotel La Hacienda De La Langosta Roja Hotel Restaurante Hacienda de Jesus Pete’s Camp Restaurante El Nido Restaurante La Vaquita Marina SCORE’s TIP: For more information on these restaurants and more, Click Here.
