Returning from a four-year music hiatus, Devlin makes his comeback with his third studio album, The Devil In. Daniel Caesar spits pure bliss. You might not have heard of the name, but you will definitely remember his soothing voice and flawless lyrics. Daniel Caesar, of the IXXI collective, has been steadily making his way up the ranks since his start in 2013. The Canadian artist had been gaining popularity off of his EPs, Praise Break (2014), Acoustic Break (2015) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015). However it was his single Get You, a collaboration with singer Kaliuchis and jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD, released in October of last year that really started to get him noticed by the wider public, with 20 million streams on Apple Music. He has since been nominated for a Juno award for his Pilgrim's Paradise EP in the R&B/ Soul Recording Of The Year category along with The Weeknd, Partynextdoor, Dvsn and Tanika Charles. After a good few years of grinding it's great to see Daniel finally starting to get the recognition he deserves and it looks like he's set to blow, big time. We're entering a new age of R&B genres that were once presumed dead, in the early 2000's. A new age where men are applauded for lyrically crying and spilling their emotions through soft beats and moody undertones. One of the men already living his mark in this 'new age' is Johnny Rain. With a slow, sensual sound that signifies emotional suffering, we're catapulted back to the rawness that first drew us to the allure of The Weeknd. Johnny Rain, at only 23 years old, is sure to follow in his pattern. For a taste, check out his beautiful single Harveston Lake. If anything, Devlin, generally known as a Grime artist, has moved away from Grime to pure Hip-Hop. With this, we see a wide-range in the beats on the album, ranging from heavy hitting Cold Blooded to the soulful Blue Skies. The variation in production produces a well-rounded and engaging album, a quality that is often missed on traditional Grime LPs. Furthermore, the quality and variety in Devlin's lyrics across this project truly stand him amongst the best lyricists, if not the best, in the UK. The slower Hip-Hop-esque beats allow him to recite both creative and topical lyrics, something that is not replicated enough on fast, 140 bpm, traditional Grime beats. Devlin is going from strength to strength and I am sure we shall be seeing more quality content from him very soon.
