48 ISSUE 97 / 2017 INDIE Following on from her disappearance from the music scene back in 2013 Lorde is back with two eye popping singles as she gears up for the release of her second album, Melodrama. Lorde's debut album Pure Heroine was hailed for its 10 piece track list, with Royals reaching number one in over 6 countries and critics cheering her first pop masterpiece for its candid production and lyrical ingenuity. Trailing a three year absence, Lorde has come back. The New Zealander hasn't held back with her first single, Green Light, as the anthem is pumped full of sun drenched beats for a familiar pop sound. This new energetic direction is a suggestion of where Lorde's second album release, titled Melodrama, will be headed, and that possibly Melodrama won't be as darkly saturated as her murkier debut. Lorde followed up the high spirited and tireless Green Light with the tender track, Liability. Liability is stripped back to nothing more than the beautiful simplicity of Lorde's voice pressed against the dabble of piano keys. Melodrama is set to be released on June 16th. NEWS: LORDE ALBUM OF THE MONTH: THE TOURIST The Tourist drop one of their most original albums yet with Clap Your Hands Say Yea. What Alec Ounsworth has created wouldn't have been possible if hands weren't joined by himself and producer Dave Fridmann, a producer known for his work on albums by icons MGMT, Tame Impala and The Flaming Lips. What the pair have composed has managed to grapple at our hearts all while producing a sound that encourages listeners to twist and sway. Clap Your Hands Say Yea, has seen production elements that can only be described as desperately pretty. With tracks that are always trapped in a warm hearted melody, but are also always grounded by earthy acoustic instrumentation and chunkier bass kicks, the album is always underpinned by its rock encapsulating genre. The originality that meticulously shackles each track on Clap Your Hands Say Yea's fifth album stands it as possibly their strongest attempt to date. TRACK OF THE MONTH: SANDS Poison In You is the debut single taken from multi-instrumentalist Sands. SANDS began making music early, at the age of 13, quickly becoming obsessed by records and playing drums and guitar in bands, later getting into the recording and engineering side. Some of his musical influences include Neil Young, The Smiths, Bowie, Stone Roses, The Rolling Stones and Italian composer Carlo Rustichelli. Poison in You is a hypnotic, gritty song with dark magnetic rhythms and a hint of grunge. It showcases edgy lyrics sung on a slightly upbeat and electric tempo. It sounds like Spiritualized meets PJ Harvey, Type O' Negative and Arcade Fire.
