GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: XANA ROMEO The Fox and Firkin club in Lewisham brings us a reggae- infused night with The Twinkle Brothers on the 23th March. Xana's mix of hard dub beats with smooth and sweet vocals provide the perfect sound for her powerful and political lyrics. As the daughter of Jamaican reggae and roots artist, Max Romeo, Xana is doing more than just following in her father's footsteps. Her father's musical influence encouraged her to take up a career in the industry in 2012, and she released her debut single No Love, a roots dub track about the harshness of the system we live in, two years later. Xana's strong production and inspiring lyrics are leading a new generation into rising and fighting for their rights by speaking of and celebrating black African history, Rastafarianism and the social issues that she deems important. The Twinkle Brothers were formed back in 1962 by brothers Norman and Ralston Grant in Falmouth Jamaica. They were soon joined by band mates Eric Barnard on piano, Karl Hyatt on percussion and Albert Green on congas. Known for songs such as Give Rasta Praise, Praise Jah, You Can Do It and Beat Them Jah Jah. Expect songs filled with a mixture of calypso, soul, pop and soft reggae. EVENT PREVIEW: THE TWINKLE BROTHERS LIVE ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DRE ISLAND Modern reggae star Dre Island uses his early musical experiences and talent to create positive vibes and vibrant music that brings joy and inspires. As a trained pianist, Dre sung with his local church choir and had music lessons from a young age but being introduced to a recording studio at 11 years old blossomed his love of making beats and producing music. His hard and powerful vocals were first introduced in 2008 when Dre transitioned from just producing music to becoming a recording artist. But it was only in 2010 when he made a cameo appearance with famous dancehall DJ Ding Dong at the Shaggy and Friends show that helped him to gain notoriety, as well as a spot on popular Jamaican Summer Festival Reggae Sumfest. In 2013, the artist dropped his first EP, Rastafari Way, a six track collection of music that celebrates his belief in the Rastafarian culture which was produced by King-I-Vier. Still producing most of his music himself, his latest release with Jamaican musician Popcaan, We Pray is an easy listening, uplifting track about survival and triumph. 50 ISSUE 97 / 2017 REGGAE PLAYLIST Set in Stone Stick Figure Awakening Spiritual King David's Melody Augustus Pablo Ziggy Marley Ziggy Marley Here's the reggae on our playlist this month:
