Mobile Device Management: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle capable of working with multiple carriers, but these carriers often charge a premium for international data service. The amount of data your MDM solution will consume on an average day is a big concern if your user base is roaming in a region where bandwidth is at a premium. Some MDM offerings can put your service in the cloud. This is great if you're trying to maintain a small IT footprint, but it can also be useful in a global user setting. Cloud services have the unique ability to have a distributed geographic presence (i.e., users in London and Los Angeles can both connect to local points of presence). While many MDM suppliers will offer a cloud-based approach, make it a point to find out where in the world the cloud data centers are located. Local laws and regulations need to be considered when deploying MDM in an international setting. For example, technology import and export laws might make it illegal to bring devices or applications into certain countries. MDM can help control the use of applications and restrict the use of data services in countries where it is required to do so. Putting the Final Piece in Place The bottom line with mobile devices is that they make us more productive. In the legal setting, productivity is of critical importance, but supporting a wide range of mobile devices introduces new risks. MDM solutions bring all of the pieces together, offering a way to handle these risks. David Beck is the Manager of Global Information Security for SNR Denton.
